How Sweet It Was Vintage

I am a half black and half white, my skin a beautiful brown, today while walking around downtown with my full white sister we came to your place of business to shop. I was followed around the whole time by a lady in a quilt skirt. I am between a sz. 2 and 4 and when I asked to try on a piece, I was told «well this is a extra small», .(really) My sister and I were disgusted. Did I mention I hadn’t seen my sister nor had she been to Tucson for 15 let me repeat 15 years. Great impression for the snowbirds, great way to represent small business. The only thing you represent is disappointment and ignorance. The sad thing was It was so embarrassing for you not me. I am a shopaholic but because I was so suffocated with the shadow on my back. we went to the next store to shop.

The pieces are laundered. Organized by decade. Easy to shop.

Customer service is excellent. The girl behind the counter went out of her way to recommend items for a patron who was shopping for a wedding party.

A little treasure of a vintage shop in the desert! I stopped by this shop when I was on a day trip to Tucson to see the Broken Bells. I am a size 10 and found a handful of dresses to try on. I ended up buying a late 40s yellow and black sun dress for around $ 40. A total steal in my book! If I’m ever in Tucson again, I would definitely pop back in to see what they have. The ladies at the counter were sweet and even directed me to the nearest bathroom (across the street) when I asked.

I end up browsing this store many of the times that I’ve visited, but when the weather turned cold this winter, I came by looking for a pair of warm boots. I managed to find a nice pair of tall, black leather riding boots in my size for only $ 35! (This is coming from a person who’s tried on a million pairs of boots — only to be disappointed because I have narrow calves and small feet.)
HSIW has a great selection of clothes, shoes, and accessories. It’s probably one of my favorite vintage stores in Tucson.

She immediately came out and asked if I was looking for something in particular. Everything in the store is very organized, so she directed me to the 20’s-30’s section. There was a nice selection of clothing and accessories.
I wish I had a bit longer to browse the store, so I will be back. If you’re looking for a costume for a certain «vintage» era or love vintage clothing period, this is the place to check out. Lots of unique stuff!

lovely little shop… recently changed hands, so it looks a little different, but it is still the best place for vintage jewelry on 4^th Ave.

I went in here because a friend has a Hollywood glamour themed party coming up and we needed clothes for the occasion. I already had a dress, shoes, and a purse, and needed to shop for a waistcoat, tie, and hat for him. While he already has a suit, we weren’t sure how it would fit him.
After a while of poking around and looking at the incredible things, I did find a tie for him at a very reasonable $ 2. I didn’t know if my husband wanted a bowler hat or a fedora and he has a big head, so that presented a problem. Now that we know his suit needs a bit of tailoring and fits just fine, we can see about looking for a waistcoat to match his suit and a hat that will fit. We will definitely be back for at least that, and when I lose a little more weight, I will see about buying clothes from them as I need it.

Who found a pair of 1970s eel skin Justin boots for $ 28 here? Moi. The truly sweet selection of 70s pant suits, polyester June Cleaver house dresses, sweater vests, and mod hipster Emma Peel sheaths makes Sweet singular among the daunting array of Tucson thrift and vintage. Whether costuming, fetishizing, or indulging one’s inner Marcia Brady, Sweet has the creative retro niche well covered. While I don’t always buy, just browsing the rounders has never failed to make me smile.

I love this store, I always find something I want. They have such a wide variaty of clothing, from diffrent time periods, and places. I love to buy dresses here, they have stuff you won’t find anywhere else.
The down side is they are a bit expensive, for a second hand shop. But really they have high quality items, I can’t shop here every day, but once in a while its fun to pick up one or two great finds.

Limited selection costume shop, no returns, high markup. It would be one thing if this were either a bargain basement place like Savers or a really good unique clothing store, but it’s neither. The prices are jacked up quite high, but the stuff you’re getting isn’t really all that good compared to what you can get down the street or at Savers.

I love how friendly the service is, when you walk in they are ready to help you find what you need. In this case my teenage sister was looking for a prom dress and although we didn’t find what she was looking for, it was sure fun trying to find it! Every decade of fashion is covered here and everything is authentic. None of those cheaply made costumes here, these are actual articles of clothing that you would have seen someone wearing in each respective decade.
In the backroom they have really old costumes that you need to ask for assistance to look at and try on. The dressing rooms are cute with satin curtains to cover your back bumps. They also have any accessories you would need, from hats to scarves and jewelry. Some things you just might want to buy to wear everyday!

Neat store with a lot of vintage clothes and jewelry but buyer beware. I tried on some clothes and bought a few things. When I got home I found a few small holes in the clothes. I found a few stains too. I had a bit of sticker shock with some of the old shirts. $ 20? Really for a shirt that hasn’t been worn in 30 years? I think I will pass.

quick review: this place is AWESOME. they have so much stuff & it’s usually worth wading through all of it because I always find something great. I got a pair of vintage purple cowboy boots for $ 25 about a year ago. I still love them. and I love How Sweet it Was for selling them to me.

I stopped off here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Often, you look for vintage clothes and it will be at best a scavenger hunt. This place was quite well organized. Clothing had tags with the size and price prominently marked, as well as a one to two word description of the period the piece comes from (Western, Victorian, etc). Being a guy, I was looking for early 1900’s style dress wear, and started off somewhat nervous to ask the nice, young, hip looking girl behind the counter for help. But I have no fashion sense, and wanting a look from a century ago, I was even more lost. Not only was the girl willing to help, she was a joy to deal with. And she was able to juggle my needs along with those of the other customers in the store. I think because of her attitude and willingness to help me out, I ended up spending more than I likely would have. That is the sign of good (and knowledgeable) customer service. They have excellent collections of clothes spanning back to I’d say the late 1800’s, men and women’s. The selection of hats was extraordinary, as well as all the accessories you would need to go with whatever look you were going for. Prices? Hard to say as I have no idea what vintage clothing should cost. But I came away with 2 very nice vests, an old-​fashioned tuxedo-​style button down shirt, with old fashioned push-​through buttons (not missing a single button), 2 pairs of dress slacks, an old fashioned bow tie, a kerchief, and an old relaxed (Western?) style derby hat. All this came to about $ 130, with the hat being the most expensive item at $ 34. All the clothing is clean and certainly usable. They also have boots, dresses, wedding gowns, just about anything you could imagine finding in a vintage clothing shop. And there was a selection for every item. Just really impressed with the situation considering I was going in there without a clue as to what I would find, or even what it was I was looking for.
They also do rentals for higher end, full outfits for those special dressed up occasions.
Finally, being on 4^th Avenue, it’s nice to go to the one section of town where it actually feels like a cool metropolis and find something fun like this.
