It came time to replace the slipcovers on our well used couch. Ordering a new set would cost over $ 1k and I was not willing to pay that given the fact that I had the original white slipcovers just sitting in my closet for the past 7 years. I started a DIY project that involved dyeing my couch slipcovers in the washing machine. Very long story short, it didn’t work for me because of washing machine capacity issues. I ended up with 7 pieces of my slipcovers in varying shades of grey(ha), and I needed professional help. After consulting with various online dye shops I found Alvarado Dye. I exchanged emails with Jade who was super responsive & knowledgeable. I explained to her my project, my problems, and my desired outcomes. I brought my slipcovers to their shop, and after looking at them, she was confident they would be able to dye them. At this point, I was fairly flexible with the finished color, as long as it was evenly colored. I gave her a swatch of a dark charcoal fabric, hoping for that to be the final color. She let me know up front that depending on how much of the color I dyed they were able to remove, would affect the color they dye it. Again, I said fine, as long as it was even(and always knowing in the back of my head that black was an option as a last resort). Less than a week later Jade let me know my covers were ready. She said that after bleaching, there was a tint of red still left and that it did affect the final color. The fabric came out more of a dark purple/navy, but it was indeed even. The color is also deep & rich. There’s no way I would have been able to come even close to this level of intensity. The price for the service was fair and far less than buying a new set of covers and it allowed me to use slipcovers I would have otherwise had no use for. In this whole process I’ve learned that there are very few people out there who offer dyeing services, particularly if you have large items. If you are dreaming up a DIY project that is just a little too big in scope for you to undertake, I highly recommend Alvarado Dye!
