Medina is certainly not lacking for casual restaurants, but I’d have to say my new favorite place for a cozy nosh and company is Eileen’s Café in Valley City. I met a few girlfriends there recently for a plate of their signature french toast. I added coffee, and a bowl of oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar to my order, and savored every tasty, conversation and laughter-coated bite. Terri, the owner, visited our table a few times to say hello, and brought us a plate of chocolate chip cookies(dessert for breakfast.. hooray!). The waitstaff here are young and super sweet, and it’s one of those community eateries where the locals want to be. It’s warm, it’s friendly, and let’s face it, wherever there is food, I feel at home, too. Fun fact(maybe it’s true or maybe the girls were preying on my gullibility?): apparently, the restaurant got it’s name because the building is slanted. ‘I Lean’ turned in to ‘Eileen.’ I really want to believe it’s true. Either way, it was a morning well-spent, and a breakfast date that ended with a trip to the lavender-scented gift shop next door. Stop in for a yummy bite of homemade goodness during the day or come for their newly extended evening hours. Free WiFi and, word has it, they’ll be adding local music to the menu soon.

The coffee at breakfast joints usually aren’t the best, however, Eileen’s is pretty good. Strong enough and brewed frequently enough so that doesn’t taste like its been sitting on the burner in heaping quantities getting burnt. I went for the Eileen’s breakfast which came with 2 pancakes, 2 sausage links, 2 slices of bacon, 2 eggs and hash browns. Yeah, it sounds like alot but really compared to say Cracker Barrel portions, it wasn’t that much. haha! Yeah, okay okay, I was a hungry girl and ate it all. The hash browns here are great. Liked that as much as the coffee. Everything else… it was alright. Pretty standard and pretty hard to mess up. I would need to try one of their more complicated items like… their omelette’s? to judge their skill. If you are looking for a nice homey place to enjoy a no rush breakfast with the old school charm of mismatched coffee cups and plates at very decent prices, come here,
