Some of the best food around. We drive almost 30 minutes to go here at least once a month. I always get the pulled pork sandwich. It has a smoky taste and great texture, which balances well with their sweet bbq sauce which you can add yourself. The pulled pork is served without sauce. My wife and daughter prefer the chicken. The cole slaw is amazing – best I’ve ever had. Hush puppies are awesome – always fresh, crisp outer shell and moist inside. I also like how consistent they are with the food. My only complaint, and it’s a small one, would be the men’s restroom(can’t speak for the ladies room). It really just needs a good cleaning and fixing up. For me, that’s not enough to take off a star, though. The food and service are both excellent. Highly recommend this place!

I came into this place for the first time at the beginning of the month. They had a coupon from the holiday mailing from Landstown Commons Shopping Center. I’ve wanted to try this place out anyways, but the coupon helped me actually get in there. On this visit, I ordered the two meat platter with chicken and pork. It already comes with six hush puppies and two sides, which I had the macaroni and cheese and fries as the sides. The order was available fairly quickly since it was quiet in there that day. The place is easy to navigate and is kept clean. There is also outdoor seating available, though I’d wait until the weather was warmer before doing that. Overall, the food was okay on this visit. The off bone chicken that I had was dry. I tried using some of the sauces that they have to go with the food, but I really didn’t like any of the types of sauces available. The pulled pork was just fine and was not dry. I did like the hush puppies and the macaroni and cheese though. Fries were good too, but similar to just anywhere you go to get fries. Overall, I think the prices are a bit higher for what you get. Putting that aside, everything was okay in the end. I may come back in the future, but I have other places that I do want to try out as well in terms of barbecue meats.

Been coming to Smoked From Above since it was on Baxter Road many years ago now. Always been satisfied with the quality and quantity of the food. Since the owners have opened other businesses in town and are not in the restaurant as frequently, I think that the quality has declined slightly since it first opened, and especially since it moved to Landstown. Overall, however, an excellent local business that should be supported.

Like the atmosphere and seemed to have a good crowd. I had the meat platter with Coke slaw and porkey beans, and beef. I’m not sure how they smoked it but it was soggy and like it’s been in a crockpot. The beans were sweet enough but completely overlooked. Lastly the Cole slaw, terrible, it was a salad with dressing on it. But before this is a complete bash. I MUST say that hush puppies are delicious, well cooked and had some texture and flavor just like a hush puppy should taste. So overall another mediocre BBQ joint. Winner of 2014 best of, guess I should of came here 2 years ago.

Not the best BBQ in town, but still top notch! Love the new app available and love the little shop. Will for sure come back again! Pork BBQ sandwich with mac and cheese is the best! Be sure to grab extra sauce!

I’ve been craving BBQ, so my husband & I stopped in this past weekend for lunch. I was worried that the weekend before Christmas we wouldn’t be able to find a parking spot, but we had no problem. It was difficult deciding on what order. I went with the one meat platter that was served with your choice of meat, two sides, & six hushpuppies for $ 8.99 which I thought was a pretty good deal. I went with the pulled pork, collard greens, & the porky beans after discovering they were out of mac & cheese. Ugh the heartbreak! My husband had a pulled pork sandwich with slaw & his choice of side, collard greens. Add on two drinks & our lunch came to $ 22, not bad considering the amount of food. Our meal was satisfying & I really liked the sweet vinegar they serve with the collard greens. Their signature BBQ sauce was tasty on top of the pulled pork. I’ll definitely stop back in for BBQ when I’m in the area.

As far as bar-b-que goes, this was the most middle of the road, uninspired, forgetable meat I’ve had in tidewater to date. The sauce is incredibly sweet and the ribs were regrettably dry despite being lathered in the sweet sauce. A 1⁄3 rack is 4 skinny bones and at 12.95, a bit overpriced. The baked beans were REALLY sweet with molasses and brown sugar masking the fact they used smoked meat in their recipe. The coleslaw was long cut(I hate finely minced cabbage sawdust) but limp. Amazingly, it was the only thing that wasnt sweet. The hush puppies were well and thoroughly hushed as they had been refried several times till they matched the color of wet cardboard. They also lacked any flavor. I was really disappointed in the lack-lustre experience and will venture elsewhere for my ribs in the future. Establishment was clean but staffed by high school girls who continually giggled and basically acted like high school girls.

Great staff! Apparently I lost my wedding rings while eating there(back-tracked my steps when realized they were missing) and can’t thank the honest employees for finding my weddings rings while cleaning up that night and keeping them safe for me! Phewwww!!!

Dissapointed in the young staff a bit. Went there with my kids and one of them had a burnt grilled cheese. The burnt side was down like the cook tried to hide it, but my kid complained. They did replace it, but they should have never served that. Second issue is the brisket. Where’s the smoke taste? No smoke ring, no smoke taste, and tastes like it came out of a crock pot. Let’s get some wood in that smoker! This place has gone down a tad since it first opened. The quality of the smoked meat is not as good as it used to be. I hope the owner can step it up.

We tried a 4 meat platter so we could sample all of their items. The result… Pretty average BBQ! Ribs were tasty but very greasy. Chicken was pretty good, with nice flavor. We had a hard time telling the difference between the pulled pork and beef brisket — they were shredded so fine it looked like they were in a food processor. Baked beans were delicious and the onion rings were very good too. The original sauce was the best and the mustard sauce was the next best. The other 2 sauces were not good at all. Overall just average BBQ.

Brisket sandwich was pretty much flavorless and in some parts cold… Very disappointed… Ribs pretty much the same. At least hush puppies were good.

If you are looking for quick and go BBQ, then this place is it. Very clean, organized, and systematic. You go in, order off the wall menu, wait with a buzzer, and pick up your meal in the side window. Eat in or take out, your call. The food was decent, but could have been better. They do have table side sauce, so if you get to go, remember to stop and intensify the favor of the food. The sandwiches themselves run around 6 – 7 dollars. Kinda pricey when you look at bringing the whole family. We went ahead and ordered a separate side and shared it. They offer military and senior discounts. Just ask, it’s no secret as its all over the posted menu. It’s wasn’t too busy on a Tuesday night around 6:45, but there was interest from folks stopping in. In the summer, I’m sure the outdoor seating is nice!

The pork barbecue is my fav! The sides are ok. Love the fries, but on my last visit, I was unpleasantly surprised at the amout of fries in our take-out. Both sandwiches came with a «happy meal» size order of fries. Disappointing! The guy in the back apologizes for the wait, but I would have happily waited for a full order of fries!

Mike was in the mood for BBQ ribs and wanted to try this place. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was casual. There were high top tables which we like. We placed our order at the counter then were given a buzzer, when it went off we picked up our basket of food and filled up our drinks at the soda fountain in the back of the room. Mike’s ribs and the hush puppies were great and we would get them again. My meat plate with BBQ chicken was good but not as good as the ribs. The cole slaw was ok, and so were the vegetables and onion rings. I would definitely go back for the ribs.

I’m not sure what happened here… I know I’m in the minority here, but the Unilocal reviews lead me to believe that this was a top end BBQ place. I was going to try the top 4 on my list before passing judgment on my personal favorite. This was the second one sampled and I knew immediately it wasn’t beating out Mission BBQ. I don’t like giving out such a low grade and its not to belittle anyone, but the food in my opinion just isn’t up to par. I’m feeling like a «The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly» style of review today so here we go. The Good: The folks here are super friendly and I’m sure they try hard, lots of smiles. The hushpuppies were a nice touch to the platter I got and very good. The onion rings were ok, but I’m being a little generous putting them in the good column. The Bad: The sausage was completely dependent on peppers that were in it. If the sausage can’t stand on its own I’m sorry, but adding peppers to the mixture isn’t going to help. The pulled pork was completely flavorless and soggy, it needed all the help the BBQ sauce could give it. The Ugly: The«Brisket», I use that word loosely because the first thing I thought when I took a bite was«this is pot roast», there’s nothing wrong with pot roast, but this wouldn’t have even been good pot roast, not to mention that’s not what I wanted. The cashier told me it was brisket so I’m not even sure what to think here. I wanted to give 2 stars for the friendliness, the puppies, and their discount, but that’s not what supposed to be drawing people in so I left it at 1. Maybe it was a very off night, but sadly I doubt it, not with 3 different meats failing to make the grade. Even their generous 10% military discount won’t bring me back here.

Sadly the piggy shack known as hog heaven closed down, quite some time ago. I had yet to taste BBQ to compare. Smoked from above was such a treat. I had pulled pork, did the meal option which came with a side. I had hush puppies which were delectable. Get sweet tea because… you’re in the south!!! They have several types of sauces to top your sandwich with, and also have pulled chicken as well as brisket for sandwiches. I opted for no cole slaw on the sandwich which is how it is traditionally served because… well I think cole slaw is a fear factor food. The BBQ was great, not dry at all. They also have regular or large options. Regular seemed like enough with the sides. The hush puppies were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! Will surely stop here again next time I’m in town. Manager was walking around and checking on people, very friendly.

Coming from someone who is obsessed with BBQ– Wow! What a great place to grab a bite to eat! The staff is super friendly and helpful. The cashier even offered us a sample of the BBQ before we ordered it to see if we liked it or not. The food is delicious! The platters are definitely the way to go; we got 1 meat w/2 sides and 6 hush puppies. The hush puppies were my husbands and my favorite things! We loved that the receipt had a bible verse on it too! We will be returning and bringing the whole family next time! Prices are reasonable and you can just tell how much the owner cares!

I am a BBQ fanatic. It is one of my favorite meals. I have tried the slabs and the pulled pork. The ribs are fantastic. They are cooked perfectly. They are tender, moist, and extremely flavorful. The sauce that they serve on them is… perfection! As for the pulled pork, it is nothing special. I wouldn’t waste my time or money on it. It is pretty average fare. The fries are good and the BBQ sauce is excellent on them. The coleslaw has got to be one of the worst recipes for coleslaw that I have ever tasted. I hope that they don’t make it there. It’s bad. The applesauce and green beans taste like they come straight from a can with no real seasoning. The hushpuppies are okay. They aren’t great, but they aren’t bad and they definitely aren’t overloaded with onions like many places serve them. That’s a good thing. I had to give this place four stars because the ribs are outstanding. If you have to order sides, get two orders of fries unless you like subpar sides.

Smoked from Above is sent from above. Pretty yummy BBQ! My boyfriend and I had lunch here today. The place is nicely decorated with cute little pig paraphernalia combined with an «All American Theme» which totally suits the food served there. I love pulled pork, so that’s the sandwich that I chose. I also upgraded to a meal for an extra $ 3.95 for a side and a drink, and chose potato salad for my side. The sandwich was great, and the regular BBQ sauce at the table totally set it off and added a great flavor.(There is a table full of different sauces in the back as well.) The potato salad was good also. Their sweet tea was perfect to me — just the right amount of sweet! My boyfriend had the beef BBQ sandwich and collard greens. I would definitely come back. And it’s cool because they offer a military discount. The owner Michelle is awesome — very nice and personable. She makes all the patrons feel welcome. Great dining experience.

Not great but still really really good. I live in Charlotte, so I know a thing or two about barbecue(hey, a rhyme!). I chose their two meat plate, a third of a rack of ribs and a pile of pulled pork. It comes with two sides — potato salad and mac & cheese — and a few hush puppies. Order and pay at the counter, get a pager, take a seat and come back for your meal. The pork was quite moist and the ribs were nice and meaty. No complaints about the sides either — the potato salad wasn’t too mushy and while the mac & cheese was tasty, the consistency was loose. Hush puppies were fresh out of the fryer — very tasty, very hot and not dry. I took a seat in their nice outside seating area, even if the tables are a little close together. So to summarize, good ‘cue. Not the best, but likely some of the best that you’ll find in the Virginia Beach area. I’d return!
