Sushi Mama

This is my first comment I have ever written even though I have used Unilocal for at least 4 years, lol. I say that to express how amazing this food really truly is. I used to eat sushi often when I lived in Atlanta however since I relocated here I have been unsuccessful in finding somewhere that compares to the quality I was accustomed. That was until today. I recommend you visit this place if you want a quality taste of sushi. I enjoyed the spicy Sakura and of course I had to try the playboy, because It came highly recommended by other Unilocal users also, mama is the one making the sushi and unlike other sushi places where the chef lacks personality she is so very friendly and funny along with the rest of the staff.

Sushi mama has excellent service and amazing food! I believe we sat in the golden seats which was right in front of the sushi chef. You could see the chef at work through the glass and see all the creations right before your eyes. The sushi chef was a woman and she was very kind, social and engaging to customers. Turned out she is the «Sushi Mama» and owner of the establishment! We had one of the special rolls which was the Playboy roll, and we had the Las Vegas Mama, Banzai roll and Volcano roll. YOU MUST TRY THE PLAYBOY ROLL! This roll is very unique in the way it’s made. It has different types of fish in it and has so much flavor. After making the roll it is blow torched then wrapped in foil and lit on fire as it is sent to you. The foil essentially gives it a true smoked flavor and heat. The combination of the ingredients was out of this world. Highly recommend!
The Banzai roll wasn’t too crazy, it reminded me of a regular California roll.
The Las Vegas Mama was perfectly spiced with a jalapeño sauce meaning it didn’t have me heaving for water.
The Volcano roll is one of my favorite rolls in general so I had to order it. It wasn’t the BEST one I’ve had, but it was cool to watch her form it into a volcano. I’d recommend this as well.
Sushi Mama has definitely earned my interest in trying all of her Korean food as well (she’s Korean and has a lot of Korean food on the menu). I can’t wait to go again.

Great food! Great advice! Mama is great! My first time having a spicy scallop roll prepared the way she did and it was awesome! I will definitely be back!

I went there last week, and it was the most mind blowing sushi I ever had. Literally changed my life. I had to go back, and it was even better the second time. The workers are the nicest people, and the service is very fast. When you see this place, do not second guess yourself. Go here now.

My friend and I visited Sushi Mama and loved the special sushi rolls. Very unique and good combinations. Loved seeing a woman as the Sushi chef! She came out to our table and asked about our experience too, which was nice :) I will definitely go back.

Some of the best sushi I’ve had here in the area and the bulgogi was excellent! The service was quick and friendly. Will come again :)

Update this is my second time and I am not disappointed very good!

The playboy roll was out of this world. Everyone loved their chicken teriyaki dishes and sushi bites. You can never go wrong with a yellowtail sushi roll. Sushi Mama rolls it all herself and takes care of her regulars. She used to look after me at another local sushi establishment and I will follow her wherever she goes. They accommodated our large group of 15 people and delivered our various cooked meals and sushi rolls with a smile.

I used to come here when it was previously a Sakura, so I thought, «Why not?» I wasn’t wowed. I got the sushi lunch with an added eel roll and my fiancé got the Bulgogi beef. I’m pretty sure they were made with the same rice. My eel roll was tiny and very loosely rolled. The sushi was cut generously but certain pieces were dry. The miso soup was better than ok but could have used more tofu. It wasn’t horrible but I won’t go out of my way to go back…

Finally made it here last night after looking over reviews and pictures and soooo glad we did. It was amazing. Definitely my new favorite sushi place.
We got hot sake, miso soup, traditional green salad which I enjoyed alot because of the different type of dressing that usually comes with salad at sushi places. Also got sashimi which was so fresh and great sized pieces. I like when they give you a lemon slice to squeeze over the top. Really brightens up the fish. The speciality rolls we got were: tornado, beautiful, pembroke, and spicy sakura rolls. All of them were excellent. They have a lot of speciality rolls that we gotta come here more ften to try all of them! I like eel and a lot of the rolls have eel which is perfect for me but my non eel liking boyfriend wasn’t as enthusiastic as I was but he enjoyed everything just as much as I did.
We also got plum wine. Yum! Served in chilled glasses and 10 bucks for 2 nicely filled glasses. Mama came over and gave us a sample of «sushi taco» which was onion, red pepper, and jalapeño wrapped up fried and a yummy sauce drizzled over it. Holy spicey! It was so good and no lie my boyfriend was dipping his finger in the sauce because it was that damn good.
We’ve never been here before but Mama made us feel like we were regulars and we will definitely be regulars now.

I visited here the Friday before Halloween and it was lovely to see that it was busy. Sushi Mama always has nice staff that remembers you and makes you feel at home. I’m super fond of the Chirashi dinner, it comes with fresh cuts of fish over a bed of seasoned rice (this is magical seasoning, so good!). You don’t always get the same kinds and it’s a really fun adventure. I tried a tiny baby octopus for the first time! There was also abalone, tuna, tamago, salmon, mackerel, and others. My friend tried a new roll that had shrimp tempura and cream cheese in it with lobster and avocado on top. I tried a piece, it was amazing! Her husband isn’t such a big sushi eater, but had chicken bulgogi, which he really enjoyed.

I absolutely love this place! The atmosphere is very nice and relaxing. The owner is a total sweetheart. She remembered what I ordered over a month ago. The food is delicious, prepared right before you, and fresh. This is my favorite sushi spot and It’s a must try! 100% quality on food and service!

Mama was very nice. Even with Togo food. The Playboy and Spicy Mama secret rolls were great. The finishing touch controls on the playboy roll creation was great.
Usually Beef Nega Maki is tough and chewy but mama’s was perfect.
Even our daughter loved her teriyaki chicken.
Would eat here again, when we visit VA Beach.

When you arrive it looks average nothing from the outside really captures your attention and once inside it is small and quaint. I enjoyed the very comfortable atmosphere. The staff was amazing, they were being very attentive. There is this women who is super fun, unfortunately I don’t remember her name but she was extremely sweet and fun. My mother is first time sushi eater and she helped us convince her to eat the rolls and enjoy the flavors. Now as for flavors… yup I’m going again. We orderd the Playboy. I didn’t know what it was but when it came out it was on fire and it looked so cool because it was a small blue flame and it smelled great! Once the fire was out you unwrapped the foil and dig in. Great flavors! We also ordered the New York and Ichiban very fresh tasting dishes extremely well prepared. I would recommend any one to go. On top of how awesome everything is pricing is as well great. Don’t miss out on the place it’s worth the trip.

Although we did order one sushi roll for an appetizer our meal was primarily Korean so I’m not really able to judge how well the Japanese food for this place is… that said, the Korean ROCKS!!!
Atmosphere: Relatively small place with limited 4 table seating but not so small that it’s uncomfortable. What gives this place its feel is its staff. If I didn’t know any better I felt I was in a small locals row restaurant around Gangnam Station in Seoul, Korea.
Food: We started with the Kamikaze Sushi Roll and found it prepared well and quite tasty. I wouldn’t put the sushi among our top locations but it’s definitely better than most and a place I’m wanting to go back to try more of so my taste buds can evaluate it appropriately.
Korean: We ordered the Bulgogi BBQ Ribs and the Galbi Dolsot Bibimbap. They were awesome! Truly authentic Korean food that tasted great! Lucky for me the Kimchi was also homemade and non-​stop on the refill. Loved these meals!
Service: Great! Customer service was pretty dang good. Other than waiting so long for the sushi that our appetizer ended up coming out with our meal I have no complaints.
Cleanliness: No worries here either. Tables, floors, bathrooms… everything was clean and kept that way.
Overall: I’m a huge fan of the Korean dishes here and WILL be coming back for more. When I do I’ll be sure to get some more sushi so I can update this review accordingly. Until then I recommend giving Sushi Mama a try. 4 Stars!

My boyfriend and I had a good experience here. Sushi Mama herself is pretty funny, but it isn’t our favorite sushi place around.
The sushi didn’t seem as fresh as some we have had.

Do not miss this place!!! We got 3 rolls and a bulgogi to share as a family (of 4). The playboy roll was TDF. It vomes out on fire but tastes even better than you would imagine!!!

Bulgogi was terrific. Like. I love the woman the actual Sushi Mama is just a mama to all her patrons cooking for you as you are her guest!!! Do not miss it. So tasty and can’t beet the freshness or the prices!!!

My friend and I were hungry for sushi and we wanted to go to place where we haven’t been to yet. Well we did some Unilocal research and this was the winner for us. We entered and we were greeted right away and lucky enough, there was a table for two. This place is a little small so I’m assuming it might get busy during peak hours. As we seated someone came up to us immediately to take our drink order. Great service!
There are so many different sushi to choose from. I believe there are more than 40 different types and it was so hard for me to decide. Luckily there was a whiteboard which posted the specials for that day so that made it easy for me to decide what to get. Special please! It didn’t take too long for our sushi to be made and I was excited to try the first bite. First bite went in and I was thinking to myself, this is right up there with other fine sushi establishments. I think I ate mine too fast.
In summary, if you’re tired of always going to the same place to get sushi, then this place should be number one for you to try!

I took a counter seat as usual to check up the sushi chef. She is a hard worker, funny, and sweet. I really enjoyed talking with her and her sushi. Also she is really flexible about my pickiness.
Every time I go to a new restaurant, I check the rest room. It’s clean here, which means they clean the kitchen well too.
I spent about $ 30 for 2dinners, which made us pretty full. Also I spent almost 2hours eating and chatting here.
Their music was kinda funny. Some Korean, some old Japanese Enka, some J-​pop.
I wanna check their lunch next time;)

Sushi mama was AWESOME! The sushi was so pretty!!! So tasty too! The lady making the sushi did such a wonderful job!
They had my FAVORITE sake!!! nagori! yum! Sweet and chilled and unfiltered! My fav!!!
Just wish they had another server, there was 1 lady serving us so it took us almost 2 hours from start to finish. And also the place is very small only about 10 tables total, half being a 2 top.
The tuna sashimi had some spicy ass wasabi between the tuna & rice. Yikes! I have NEVER! Had such spicy sashimi!
All in all it was a nice experience, spent about 90 $ had my favorite sake. Life is great. 4 stars sushi mama!
