I’m not from Hawaii, so I relied on Unilocal to find a place to eat for lunch. First off, this place is slooooooow. We waited 40+ minutes to get our food and we did not order much. Just a sashimi bowl, aka roll, and two lunch specials. It took about 10 minutes before we even got utensils, napkins, and water. The couple next to us got their food before they got any utensils to eat with. The aka roll was disappointing, especially for the price. I don’t mind paying $ 14 for a roll, but it should at least be good. It was plain. Nothing special about it. For such thin slices of raw fish on top and fried ebi inside, it was nowhere near being worth $ 14. Left the place unsatisfied. I thought the sushi would taste better than where I’m from(California), but I guess not.

The girl wanted THAI food so i grabbed my ankles and went to the Thai place next door. But I snuck out and put a to go order in. They asked if i was eating next door. I said why yes. They explained they would deliver the sushi to the thai place next door. I was like really i have never had a restaurant deliver food to another restaurant. They explained that they are friends. So i ordered a fried scallop hand roll, tuna avocado hand roll and spicy tuna hand roll. They were divine. Holly sex in my mouth batman. This was excellent. Little sushi bar in a very quaint town in the Waimea highlands. BTW it was chilly i was not expecting it to be cold out.

Just went here for dinner and at least I was a little unsure about this place because it was so small, but I was so wrong because their sushi and miso soup was so good!!! Our waiter was such a good one too! He would run back and forth to get our orders and did a fantastic job. Will definitely be back and definitely recommend!

Heres what this place has going for it: cheap prices and variety. Unfortunately, this sushi joint lacked in execution and consistency. We ordered four rolls: spicy tuna, California, real crab, and the shrimp tempura roll with real crab. The spicy tuna was good, no complaints there. The California roll tasted like mayonnaise wrapped in nori. This was by far the worst California roll I’ve ever had, we couldn’t even eat it. The real crab roll was eh… But at least we couldn’t taste mayonnaise. The shrimp tempura was soggy and hardly had any shrimp in it. The rolls were poorly executed and lacked innovation. We were disappointed as the reviews looked good. I’d strongly recommend you try somewhere else. Service was good.

We live in Waimea and visited here for the first time. We placed our order which consisted of a Tempura bowl, Unagi roll, Shrimp Tempura Udon, and real crab roll. The first two items which came out was the ungai roll and what we thought was the crab roll. We began to eat both rolls, which were tasty. The waiter then brought another sushi roll. I asked him what is that, he said the real crab roll that we ordered. I then point to the first roll he brought with crab in it and asked him what that was. He said a Shrimp Tempura roll. I told him we didn’t order that a shrimp tempura roll, I ordered a shrimp tempura udon. I explained to him that we started eating the first order because we thought it was the Real crab roll. The waiter said in a very sarcastic tone«I repeated your order. If this tempura roll is not what you ordered, then I’ll just take it back.» I said we want the udon. He again said«that’s why I repeated your order.» They eventually brought us a udon. At that point, I asked to speak to the manager. A young lady comes out and I explained to her that it was our first time there, the food is tasty but the waiters attitude was a huge turn off and we may not return as a result of him. I explained the issue and her response was«that’s why we repeat the order.» I explained to her, that maybe the waiter wrote down the order. She then said the same thing as the waiter, «If this is not what you ordered, then we will take it back. I tried to explain to the manager that its not about who was right or wrong, its about the waiters attitude. I told her this place has good food but we won’t be back because of he bad service.

Great little sushi spot. If you’re in the area you should stop in and try their Spicy Tuna Aka Roll. It was delicious! The service is prompt and everything is fairly priced.

I LOVEAKASUSHI! A small family owned place it is nothing fancy but puts out some fantastic sushi, soups, and salads. Aka has the best salmon skin roll on the island! Big chunks of salmon still attached, freshly battered and fried to order. The salmon is crisp and warm and the vinegar soy sauce that they drizzle over it sets a great balance in sushi or atop a salad. I have been to most of the sushi restaurants on the island, I find most of them cannot seem to make a salmon skin roll that doesn’t taste like cat food. Other great rolls are the fried scallop roll the tempura shrimp roll, the rainbow roll and his inari is the best I’ve ever had.

Wow. This place is amazing. About 15 – 20 minutes away from Hapuna Prince Hotel in Kamuela where we were staying. Very low key but their fish are super fresh. I believe it’s a husband and wife business. The server and cashier is the wife and husband is the chef, I assume. You can tell that they are new to business based off their simple website and look of their business but their service is incredible. It really broke my heart how genuine and sweet they were. They spoke understand and can speak English but I can tell it wasn’t their forte. We tried their salmon bowl, yellow tail spicy hand roll and many of their appetizers. Best sushi I’ve ever had, hands down. Support their business! I know it doesn’t look all that great but don’t judge a book by its cover. You can tell they are working their tail off to make their business run but trust me, it’s worth to visit them! They are always smiling and that’s the best attitude you can have. I will visit again when I’m on the big island.

The best sushi I’ve ever tasted! Hamachi, salmon, and maguro melt in your mouth. Delicious avocado on the caterpillar role. Moe never skimps on the portions, prepare to leave full of fish and avocado not just rice! Also BYOB!

What a find! We were looking for a solid Japanese place but couldn’t find one we liked near the Kona area. We drove up to Waimea to try this place, and we were not disappointed. First off, the miso soup here is legit. You can taste that they use good fish broth, which adds a great flavor. The Hamachi Kama is cheaper than most places I’ve seen, yet better! Crunchy on the outside, moist and delicious inside. Also tried the salmon skin salad(delicious) and the bowl with fish and unagi(also delicious!). Will be going back when we’re on the big island again for sure.

Wow, I was shocked at how good the fish is here. The tuna was just OK, but the himachi and salmon was delicious and the spicy tuna cut rolls were hi there with the best. Real crab hand roll… delicious. Seaweed was fresh but was a little disappointed with the rice quality(too soft). What a bargain too for the quality!

I guess this place has some fans, but not me. I’ve walked by the place many times but they were closed or I wasn’t in the mood. Anyway, I finally caught them open so it was time to give them a try. Service was good, maybe because I was the only customer there. So, three stars for service. The sushi? Authentic? Maybe, I guess. I ordered spicy tuna roll, my favorite, plus several pieces of nigri. The sushi master went to work and I was ready for some good stuff. «Order ready», I heard with anticipation. Then I saw my sushi… What, that? I thought to myself. The kind server handed me this little dinky tiny box. There was no way I was going to satisfy my craving. Then again, maybe the taste would win me over. But alas, disappointed again. Sigh. The roll was tiny and soooo bland. The nigri was a tiny ball of rice with a small, but thick, piece of fish. Sorry, all my taste buds agree that the meal wasn’t something to write home about. So, what do I recommend? Go across the street to Foodland Market. There is a sushi master in the deli that will make to order while you wait or you can choose from the yummy selection of «ready to go» items. There are no tables, so drive to the beach or choose a patch of grass, sit and enjoy!

Our first sushi visit on the island and I have to say, we are total fans! Came here on a Wednesday afternoon around 1:15 and we were seated right away! The place is relatively small, but cozy. The sushi menu is minimal but it has everything you need! We got the 8-piece nigiri, which came with tuna, hamachi and salmon. The fish is VERY fresh and amazing quality! Not sure if all fish on the island is like this, but you definitely get your money’s worth here. We also got very lucky to get the last order of Uni for the day and this was the BESTUNI I HAVEEVERHAD. It tasted fresh out of the sea urchin and was extremely moist and creamy. This won my heart immediately. To finish the meal, we ordered a few hand rolls to try and while they were all exceptionally good, our favorites were the unagi and the spicy salmon hand rolls! Seriously amazing! The service was also another plus because our server was so patient and attentive and calm, I loved him! I only docked a star because the portion sizes are somewhat small, but the quality makes up for it! I’m just used to bigger portion sizes on the mainland! Definitely would recommend!

This was some of the most delicious and well prepared sushi I have ever had… seriously. We just happened to stop in on our way from Hilo to Kona. The server, Max was awesome and friendly and suggested the aka roll with spicy tuna for us. It was really good! I have to say that the salmon nagiri was honestly the best I’ve ever had. The chefs know what the eff they’re doing there. We got gross full and then ate more and our bill was fifty bucks WORTHIT. *mic drop*

What a fantastic little joint, 4.5 stars. In a small strip mall in Waimea sits this place. There is little seating but you probably won’t have a hard time getting a seat. Simple prepared sushi and the like. Really good. The maguro was so blood red and dark. The sushiya produces large pieces of nigri, I am talking longer than my fingers! Dunk tap these suckers in the soy is a challenge! Best impressive part was the rice under the sushi, small cube and just a hint of warmth it melts in your mouth. Great place to get some delicious sushi. Service is also very cordial from a young Japanese woman. I would give this place 5 stars but I need to eat more items on the menu.

Our last visit there, the service was a bit slower than usual, but the couple who own it are always extremely polite, and the food is always excellent! I recommend the salmon skin salad, and the bowls are very good too, but a most def is the sake and hamachi nigiri. Very nice! Pricing is fair(better than fair if you are tired of resort food), and the food is great! Just make sure you call before going up, as they will close when they feel it is appropriate.
