Jewels by Stacy Appraisals

I have about half a dozen pieces of jewelry that I am interested in selling and needed more information to accurately market the items. I am by no means an expert on gems so I decided to make an appointment with Nancy to discus whether to have gemological reports made for the various pieces.
I met with Nancy in her conveniently located office. The setting was relaxed and comfortable. After a brief pleasant conversation Nancy examined each of my jewelry pieces. I will tell you my impressions of the experience.
Nancy knew more about each piece within 30 seconds than I did after hours of researching each piece. She examined each under a microscope and provided relevant details. She offered pricing advice. She made recommendation for selling the items. Most importantly, she spotted a mistake I had made that would have cost me several hundred dollars. This fact alone more than paid for my appointment with Nancy.
The most important thing that I would like readers of this review to consider is that Nancy could have recommended that I have formal reports made for my pieces, but she felt that the quality of my jewelry did not warrant the cost. In other words, she put my interests before her own where other people may have tried to do the opposite.
My jewelry did not turn out to be anything earth shattering, but I did not come to Nancy to hear what I wanted to hear. I came to her to hear the truth and that is exactly what she gave me. My goal for the meeting was to get information, but I came away with an education. If you hire Nancy with a clearly stated objective you will get what you want. Communication is important both way.
To sum up my review I believe Nancy is intelligent and highly experienced in her trade. She is pleasant and tactful. Most importantly she is a person of integrity. If trust in a business relationship is important to you I believe that you will find it here.

My husband got my ring appraised for insurance purposes and wanted an independent opinion. He had nothing but great things to say about her and her appraisal. Some of the previous reviewers may not understand that appraisals can come in all over the place but what you really want a fair and honest report; Nancy’s does just that. Her appraisal came in very close to what my husband paid for the ring (very little markup). I did my homework and don’t think I could have found a better appraiser.

Nancy is a total professional. She has done two appraisals for me of multiple items and been very precise and accurate both times. I am using the appraisals for insurance purposes. I felt very secure in leaving my 6 items with her and returning to get them. I would and will go back to her again.

While Nancy was friendly enough and no doubt very qualified, I came away from my experience with a less-​than-​favorable opinion. I brought to her a diamond engagement ring for appraisal and made the mistake of mentioning before hand that I was having it appraised for resale purposes. (I had the ring appraised by another independent jeweler previously, but had lost the paperwork), so I had a fair idea of the ring’s value when I met with her. After examining the ring, I was given an appraisal that was not only low, but offensive. (Im talking 25% of the value offered in the previous appraisal). However, after this low-​ball offer, Nancy turned around and offered to buy the ring from me herself – she apparently is a middle man of sorts for other jewelers. While I was under no disillusion that I’d get back even close to what I paid for the ring, I wasn’t willing to let it go for pennies on the dollar either. She persisted to the point that I felt uncomfortable, and had to very firmly repeat that I wasn’t interested in selling it for such a low price. I found it rude and unprofessional to be pressured with comments like, «i assure you you won’t get a better price anywhere else.» Maybe not, but I decided to take my chances. I’ve since had the ring appraised for a 3^rd time by a 3^rd independent jeweler and once again, was given a much, much higher value than Nancy provided.
I’m by no means an expert but I do find it a little too coincidental for comfort that out of three separate independent appraisals, two were very close while Nancy’s, the one jeweler who apparently very much wanted to purchase the ring for her own resale purposes, was significantly lower (to the tune of about $ 5K). I can’t recommend someone I feel i cannot trust to give me an honest and unbiased opinion – especially since that’s exactly what I was paying her for.

I wish I had the same experience as most of Nancy’s customers have had. Her background is impressive, and she has a long list of qualifications. Based on recommendations, I’m sure she does an impressive job. However, upon my inquiry about an appraisal of a synthetic gemstone, she stated that she restricts her practice to genuine gemstones and insinuated that my intended would not be happy about this substitution (did you catch that, two generalizations in that last statement!)
Nancy’s website states that she is an independent jewelry appraiser. If she were truly a fair appraiser, she should be more open to appraising all types of jewelry, whether it be synthetic or not — as long as the client compensated her for her time and services.

Helped my husband appraise my engagement diamonds and the (eventual) ring. He was very impressed with her knowledge and precision. She also provided an excellent recommendation for a jeweler who could design and create the ring.
She was also willing to help me work through finding a new jeweler when we moved – excellent!

She’s been in the business for years though not always in appraisals, and she’s got a combo of a personality… kind of like a grandmotherly firecracker! She has so much knowledge from all her years in the industry. I love sitting there and asking her questions, just picking her brain while she works.
She books out weeks in advance so be sure to call and get on the schedule if you are in a hurry.
