After becoming a Hirshorne associate member I was fortunate to be able to attend the last Hirshhorn after hours party(free of charge) where I was able to see Anne Truitt’s first major exhibition since 1974. It really increases the richness of the experience if you are able to see the exhibitions at one of the after hours parties. There are tons of Smithsonian Art aficionados that make themselves available for questions throughout the exhibit on party nights. Of course, you can still see all of the Hirchhorn free of charge during normal business hours and I highly recommend that you do! I really enjoyed this exhibition and hope to visit it at least one more time before it is finished on January 3rd. Anne Truitt was a DC area local and did a lot of these pieces at her last studio in Cleveland Park. She said that she couldn’t find another place in the world(than the DC area) that had the correct sunlight for her art. Truitt was known as a minimalist colorist. Many of her pieces refer to emotional states and are also meant to be subjectively experienced with reference to the observers own inner mechanisms and life experiences. I really found these pieces to be soothing and uplifting. She is a master of color. It is so enjoyable to experience how delicately the colors blend around the various minimalistic totems throughout the exhibit. Her work really brought me peace.
