what a difference a change in ownership makes. when i first moved to mt pleasant ten years ago, brown street market was great. the owner was pleasant, she opened very early and closed at a decent hour, she carried some nicer than average products(as far as corner stores go…), and the store was always clean. then, from 2008 or so until now, it changed hands a couple times and went from average to bad to worse. the last owner paid no mind to her own posted store hours and seemingly closed whenever she felt like it(usually no later than 6:30pm). i stopped relying on brown street market entirely and went straight to argyle whenever i needed anything. it changed hands again this year and reopened in october 2015. the two guys ive seen working there are really nice and seem happy to be there, which makes it feel like a nice little neighborhood place. i havent looked through everything in the store, but their chip selection is better than the average lays/fritos/doritos options we were offered previously. at this point i think they are still trying to figure out what the best store hours would be. looks like they’ll probably close around 9 or 10, which is great.

Too deep in the middle of no man’s land. I remember the days at Bancroft where the kids used to crave over Brown Street. Did not know what the hype was about then. Still don’t know now. Maybe they sold drugs to the young at-risk kids that were pregnant? Or maybe not…

Another one of those useful small convenient stores in Mt. Pleasant that save the day on a Sunday morning when you find you’re out of orange juice, eggs, bread, what have you, or when you run out of beer and have company, or when you get that itch that tells you that the numbers that keep repeating themselves in your head will win you the PowerBall at eight o’clock when the numbers are picked. I’m a real fan of quirky, useful small family owned businesses and Brown’s market is one of those. The folks who own it are extremely pleasant and hard working(qualities I value). It’s off the main drag(Mt. Pleasant Street) so mostly useful for those who live north of Park Road toward Monroe and Newton.
