I spent more time and money at the dentist during the two months that I saw Dr. Chavis than I did at any other point in my life– combined. He came highly recommended from a friend of mine, who herself quickly realized he was not the dentist she thought he was. While I could write a novel about my awful experience, I will spare you the details and leave it at this: 1. It is very likely that Dr. Chavis does unnecessary work. He also tells you that things are wrong that aren’t. One example– he told me that my gums were receding. Then, I was at the endodontist(yes, I had to see a specialist while also seeing Dr. Chavis due to all of the complications) and he mentioned how great my gums were. I remarked that I had been told otherwise by Dr. Chavis, and he seemed absolutely perplexed. Same thing goes for teeth grinding, and the number of cavities I had… and also quite likely the root canal that he treated. 2. Dr. Chavis’ staff will tell you about the work you need done while you are mid-procedure. Dr. Chavis leaves the room and has his office manager tell you that you will need to spend thousands more on something, and then comes back after you agree and sign the document consenting to pay. It is wholly inappropriate to be told about the work you will need while you are mid-procedure and numbed up– and to sign for it! What are you going to say? Okay, never mind, I’ll just get half of the procedure done? 3. I would pay in full for a procedure, only to be told a month later that I in fact, owed even more money because the insurance didn’t pay as much as Dr. Chavis thought it would. At one point, I asked to see documentation of this, and his office manager could not find the documents that showed the numbers adding up. We ultimately agreed on a number and I received some of the documentation. All in all, do not go to Dr. Chavis! There are plenty of great dentists in Washington, DC, but Dr. Chavis is not one of them.

I liked Dr. Chavis initially and his staff is very friendly. However, I don’t think most of the dental hygienists are thorough. Also, I was interrupted mid-procedure many times to hear about extra work I would need. You’re often in a vulnerable position when you’re numbed up and he’s already mid-procedure and you feel like you have very little options but to continue. While he did take the time to address my concerns after I inquired about the practice, I still did not feel exactly comfortable. Not a bad option, but not a gentle, hand-holding type dentist, which I feel many of us need when we are trusting someone else with our mouth and money.

Here is the deal: It’s a trade off. What you prioritize it up to you. Dr. Chavis is a really good dentist. He did my filling quickly and as painlessly as a filling can be. He and his staff are very friendly and professional. His office is modern, and yes, there are TVs at each station. This comes at a price. He is more expensive than most other dentists around and he will try to up-sell you on things you may not need. The missed appointment fee is $ 80 which I think is a little ridiculous(I was sick for heavens sake!).

After reading dozens of Unilocal reviews for dentists in the area, I couldn’t find any that didn’t have a lot of negatives and decided to just give Dr. Chavis a shot and it was absolutely worth it. His staff was friendly and when there was a last minute cancellation of another patient they called to offer me an option to move up my appointment. Everyone in the office was friendly and answered every one of my questions. Dr. Chavis himself was equally friendly and sat to talk with me for 15 minutes before even looking in my mouth. He made reasonable suggestions and didn’t try to push anything on me that I didn’t want or need. He answered every question I had and made sure to find me after my cleaning was finished to say goodbye and thank me for coming in. I would absolutely recommend him as a dentist and I certainly plan on going back myself in the future.

Having been to so many dentists during the 40 yrs I have lived in DC, Cary Chavis is without a doubt the only dentist I will trust to do my dental work. He has transformed my mouth which was full of old crowns, overlays and fillings, some of which were incorrectly done in the first place, to a mouthful of natural looking beautiful teeth! I couldn’t be happier. As far as the reviews from Sterling J. and MC., they couldn’t be further from the truth! Dr. Chavis does NOT wait until you’re in a weakened state to inform you of the work you need done. He spends time discussing with you what needs to be done, prepares a treatment plan and provides everything necessary to the patient for the patient to decide how/when to proceed. As far as Jasmine taking money out of patients’ accounts without their knowledge is pure rubbish! Dr. Chavis, Jasmine and everyone else on his staff are very professional, friendly making the whole experience of going to the dentist a pleasant one. Dr. Chavis is an excellent, state-of-the-art dentist!

Cary Chavis is probably the most predatory dentist I have ever met. While you are in weakened state he comes in to tell you about the work you will need done. Jasmine took money out of my account without my authorization when they did work that was possibly unnecessary on my teeth. When I called my insurance company and they told them that they had no right to do this, the dentist still kept it. This is the worst dentist I have ever been to.
