Alas, Danny Diaz, Ltd. is going out of business. Mr. Diaz is retiring. He has huge sale on suits and ties to reduce his inventory. The $ 399 suits have been reduced to $ 199, the $ 249 suits to $ 119. I just bought mine, so you may now feel free to shop.

Mr. Diaz is a pretty good tailor — when he finally shows up :). He officially opens at 11, but really some time later — as I found out when I had a… menswear emergency. The quality of his tailoring(it was just a basic shortening), was quite good and has held without issue in the last year. The quality of some of his stock — meh. Pants — yay!; socks and drawers — not so much. His tailoring services are competitively priced, but god help you if you need to make an emergency menswear purchase.

Short review: Knowledgeable and skilled tailor for more than your std alterations. Long review: I bought a Tory Burch dress b/c I loved, loved, loved the fabric but unfortunately it just didn’t fit me very well. It was a one shoulder dress with princess seams and a side zipper. I needed it nipped in at the waist and the one shoulder strap shortened but didn’t feel that this was a job for my usual dry cleaners, who are great for a cuff or hem here or there but just don’t seem like they could really deal with this type of alteration(princess seams can be a real pain). Not only did Danny do a great job but I also like that he was up front about the fact that he didn’t think another alteration I wanted could work for the dress. He said the fabric hadn’t been stretched properly from the start and would pucker if he did that add’l alteration. I went with his rec and was very, very happy with the final result. Will return for my more difficult alterations.

The man needed a new suit for an interview, so off we schlep to Syms in NoVA. But of course, the pants need shortening. And it’s 5p on a Saturday, the interview is Wednesday… oy. Luckily, I saw Danny Diaz on Unilocal on our half hour bus ride back to the District, and he stayed open a few minutes late to measure the pants and have them done by Tuesday evening. I think $ 15 for a simple hem(no cuffs) is a little steep, but we realllly appreciated his accomodation, and the suit looks fantastic.

I needed to lengthen my pants for a suit. Based on my location, this was the closest and the cheapest I could find. The man knows his suits, judging from the quality suits I saw in his shop. He noted that the lengthening required the entire extra length, which was contrary to what several people said to me. He then showed why that would be the case when I put on the pants, explaining how suit pants SHOULD work. While I was concerned, he kept the cost down: 25 for a lengthening. When I found out that my suit jacket had lost its button, I mentioned it, and he threw in the re-sewing for free. Got it in two days, and it worked great, just as he said. Would give him 5 stars, but his store opened later than it was supposed to when I came to pick it up(actually, the store had an «OPEN» sign, but lights weren’t on, and the doors were locked). Had to wait about 30 minutes before it opened. It may be because it was Saturday, but still, it was not exactly comforting.
