Deanwood Recreation Center and Library

New, modern facility. Football field had 200 kids practicing football drills, plus a few girls at a small cheer practice, at 8:30 pm, which wasn’t a problem because there were so many bright lights. The library off to the side of the recreation center seemed a little small. The disappointing aspects were the weight room and the bathroom. The weight room was tiny and completely transparent — nice view, but I wouldn’t want to be on display like that. The bathroom wasn’t clean, and the sensors on both the toilets and sinks did not function well.
I know people who use the indoor pool here often but I didn’t get a chance to check it out. I attended a Step Afrika program in the gymnasium. The gym itself seemed clean and well-​appointed with a couple of bleacher seating units. The Step Afrika performance was great, with lots of local love (go-​go music, kids and even elderly mobility impaired individuals, dancing with the performers).
I was required to sign in at the front desk and a security guard walked around the building. However, they were all pretty laid back. When I asked a front desk person about the performance, she had to ask someone else, even though there was a line of people, signs, a table, etc in front of the gymnasium, that was all visible to her. Parking was fine, I was able to park in the small main entrance lot, but there is plenty of street parking.

The facilities are beautiful, but administratively, this facility is a hot mess. I signed my sons up for swimming lessons on the weekends; and on the first day, the supervisor in charge of opening the facility did not show up and left our family and a whole slue of others standing outside waiting. It was not until 1.5 hours later, when we were about to leave, that another manager arrived and expressed his regrets. We were willing to let this slide, given that the manager was very apologetic, however on the 2^nd meeting date, the instructor thought the class started at 10:00am instead of 10:15am and started turning people away when we arrived at 10:15am. By the time we reached the aquatics manager to express our dismay, the end time of 10:45am had arrived, and we literally only got to spend 5 minutes n the water. On the 3^rd date, they cancelled the lessons last minute via email, for no apparent reason (the weather was great) and it was at this point that we decided to never patronize this location ever again.

Love the pool, although it can be a little cold for kids. It is a nice, new facility.

A Library, indoor pool, a gymnasium, fitness center, and more. It has everything I need for basic workout needs. It’s a wonderful facility. It offers swimming classes for children and adults. There’s a small parking lot and street parking but I recommend metroing as it is just across the street. It’s not going to best your local gym chains except maybe for the pool. But at $ 125 for the year for D.C. residents to access the fitness center, it’s great. I’ve been on the weekday evenings and Saturdays. There are a lot of kids around in the lobby area and they can get a little rowdy sometimes. But I like seeing them putting their community center to use. Check it out before it’s really discovered.
