Flying Fish is a neighborhood gem up in Mount Pleasant. Fast Wifi, bagel sammies and reasonably priced espresso abound. I liked that they played a whole Hall & Oats album straight through and the casual, non-hipster no-frills vibe. If you live in the area and you«need» a coffee drink every day on the way to work, you’re in a hurry and need a quick carb infusion, etc., Flying Fish is a good option. If you’re like me, where a cappuccino is one of the day’s little luxuries, you might as well go to a coffeeshop with a tighter operation, like Slipstream(microfoam, they make cashew-almond milk in house) or Wydown(delicious perfectly acidic coffee, thick foam cap).

Man, this place was busy last weekend! Walking in on a Sunday and every seat was pretty much taken. We decided to risk it and ordered. I got a bagel sandwich with sausage with an iced green tea while the wife got the breakfast sandwich with mushrooms. We actually ended up getting seats so our to-go sandwiches ended up being for here. The sandwich was pretty good, fairly standard as far as breakfast sandwiches go, not bad and if I’m stopping by and it’s not jam packed having a bite to eat here might be an option again.

This place is real LOCAL. Lot of drink options. Plenty of space and friendly staff. They RECYCLE here!!! I give them the 5th star for that!(I’m shocked that no other coffee place in DC recycles.) Wifi works well… music is indie chill and softly in the background. And so far, no loud and obnoxious voices dominating the nice open space.

Hands down Flying Fish has the best coffee in the area! They just make it right. All their coffees are awesome, my favorite is the latte. Its a quiet and quaint place, and I enjoyed working or reading there from time to time as well as meet up with a friend. Tip to Flying Fish, please please upgrade the WiFi connection(it gets slow sometime) and open for longer hours! Overall a real good coffee place.

Not a bad spot to get some work done. It reminds me of the«cute» neighborhood feel that Mt. Pleasant is known for.

Best coffee in neighborhood. Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. They remember your name and ask how you are, too. Baked goods are mostly made in house. Affordable vegan selections.

This is a real neighborhood coffee house, filled with people relaxing, working on laptops, and actually talking. It also supports local artists by hanging their art. Did I mention that their coffee, tea and bill of fare are great?

The drink I had, their signature pumpkin spice latte, was good but be warned this place does not have wifi on the weekends! Because, and get this, the owners don’t want people to linger. Someone needs to tell them that that’s what people do at a coffee shop on the weekends. They either grab their drink and go or they linger. That’s just the risk you run with an urban coffee shop. Ever see Friends!!! Plus it looks and smells like a hipsters burial ground.

No wifi on the weekends, which is kind of a bummer. However, they have a great commitment to customer service overall. It was worth the return visit.

Pretty chill place. The staff are nice and my iced coffee was well needed on a hot day. A few pastries available as well as sandwiches. My peanut butter protein snack was tasty. Anyway a good place to jump in and out.

Fantastic local shop. Good rotating selection of CC(counter culture) coffee and a nice selection of pastries. In addition to the rotating CC coffee selection, there is also a rotating series of artwork on the walls which for keeping it fresh, is a nice touch. Latte’s are some of my favorite in the city(Baked N’ Wired just a tad ahead). Offers french press serving(try with Idido!) Whole wheat bagels and freshly ground pp are a great start to any day

Flying Fish has a certain neighborhood charm and quirk that most of the other coffee shops that I frequent. Instead of the clean lines of bleached wood and precisely twisted and waxed mustache tips that seem to be the uniform of all the baristas at the roasters popping up around town, you get rickety mismatched furniture and a random assortment of artwork on the walls. I ordered an iced guava ginger tea which they steeped and poured on ice for me — — no syrup needed. The Internet was easy to connect to and I saw a lot of other happy mobile workers around me. Usually when I go to coffee shops I also am subjected to an assortment of baked carbs but I was also pleasantly surprised to see that they offer a variety of healthy dishes such as a delicious looking hummus plate and smoked salmon sandwich. This is definitely a no frills, friendly, neighborhood stop!

Two years ago I enjoy my daily coffee and pastries from«Flying Fish — service was great and the owner/‘manager was there to oversee the operation. A year ago service declined, the prices increased so I got my coffee only once or twice a week from«Flying Fish». This past Sunday after not purchasing my coffee and a pastry from there for 3 – 4 months I decided to give it another try. Big mistake — the female who took my order and $$ seemed as if she’d rather have a root canal than service the customers. $ 3 for a 16 oz. cup of bad coffee. I had to ask for my coffee after 2 minute since she or her coworker didn’t make it. Also, either it’s not the top of the quality coffee beans they’ve been using or it was improperly made. I given up FF. There are plenty of excellent coffee houses in DC — this is no longer one of them. Also, if you notice all the positive reviews they’re quick to mention free wifi and great space to work. You’re reviewing a coffee house not a library.

After church, I popped by to do some work since this was the closest coffee place. Walking in, I wasn’t very impressed with the vibe — little to no character other than if they were going for minimal-no effort as part of the design. The service wasn’t friendly or notable — I ordered and paid for my dirty chai latte and bagel with cream cheese without a smile and it was just a transaction. I typically choose coffee shops over my home because I want some extra background vibes, characters(people watching), and inspiration. Flying Fish didn’t do it for me on these accounts. I will say they do their lattes with intent and effort. I received a beautifully crafted leaf on my dirty chai latte(described as a chai latte with extra espresso) and it was quite memorable. The toasted everything bagel was also quite good, although that may be because I haven’t had a bagel in ages.

This place is good for solitary work, a catch up with friends, or even a work meeting. I’m pleased to see so many couples even drop in with their babies. The only thing I’ve ever had here is their dirty chai which was quite the revelation for me. Comfy seating to boot.

Consistently disappointed. I want to love this place. I want to support more local independent businesses. It can be said that there is a different between hospitality and customers service; unfortunately, this place lacks both of those things. I live in the neighborhood and come multiple times a week. I’ve mentioned to friends(who, like myself, are service industry professionals) how bizarre, cold, and unengaged the counter staff appear to be. The lack of times I’ve received a response to ‘hey, how are you?’ — even a welcoming smile is too much to ask? — is mind boggling. I’ve left here on more than one occasion totally turned off. If the space wasn’t so quiet and conveniently located(the coffee is standard) there’d be absolutely no reason to come here — and one less star on this review.

Go for the coffee and you’re great. For $ 5, I expected a better quality breakfast sandwich without the side of heartburn. Couldn’t even finish it without feeling disgusting. Lesson learned.

Flying Fish is an adorable neighborhood coffee shop/café that serves beer(though I didn’t get beer, as it was relatively early on a Sunday morning and I really just wanted iced coffee). It fits in perfectly with the cutesy/hip vibe of Mount Pleasant, and I wasn’t surprised to see it full on Sunday morning. We both ordered iced coffee and a bagel with cream cheese. Nothing fancy, but a standard weekend breakfast. Coffee was good… I’m finding it difficult to rate an iced coffee… If you happen to find yourself in Mt. P looking for coffee, or a coffee shop that has beer and free wifi during the week, definitely stop by Flying Fish.

Flying Fish is definitely a neighborhood favorite, and for good reason. Great selection of coffees and teas, as well as baked goodies and sandwiches, make this a cozy little spot to come with a friend or two, or just sit and sip solo. A few things seem a bit overpriced(the hummus plate, while yummy, comes with just a small scoop of hummus and a few pita triangles and veggie sticks, and is $ 6!!!). The tables are big enough to accommodate 4 – 5 people, and are semi-communal in style. There seems to be an unwritten rule that these tables are made for sharing with anyone, which is great(especially as it gets to be quite busy and crowded on the weekends).
