Getting an invite from Oliver J. to attend a production at Fort Fringe on the topic of Burning Man was a perfect date opportunity for my boyfriend and I. We both have a bit of crazy hippie in us, so I had no doubts that we’d be entertained. After the line up of outlandish and titillating monologues of authentic, first hand, Burning Man stories, we were both left fascinated, mildly frightened, and so very curious as to what our own Burning Man monologues would be. This show was my first experience at Fort Fringe. I’ve got to say that as much as I was excited by the slightly shady, underground, hipster vibe emanating from this place, I was also a bit unsettled. This was mostly due to the dimly lit streets outside of it with little packs of questionable people scattered about. With another person walking with me, I felt somewhat safe, but had I been alone, I probably would have been very nervous. Especially when I was told at the check in, that I had to walk around the outside of the building to enter in the back to have access to the restrooms. Lets say, I would have just held it had I not had someone to walk with me. Outside of the outside of Fort Fringe, the little theater is awesome; very fun, laid back, and quirky. If invited to another show, I’d definitely return. I’ll just make sure to bring a budding if it’s a late night showing.

The Capital Fringe festival is awesome. There is all different types of performances and little range in quality. I went to two performances and was in another in the past five years! My experiences have been good. It highlights the young vibrant and creative energy in the city. I thoroughly recommend seeing a show. They are pretty inexpensive — my show was $ 17 plus a pin, which ranges between $ 5 – 7. The volunteers and employees are friendly and seem hardworking! The bar at Fort Fringe is great!

On a whim, I decided to buy tickets for the Fall Fringe Festival this year to go see«Godiva Dates and One Night Stands». It was a very interesting experience to say the least. The show was a middle age gay man doing a one man show of story telling mixed with spoken word telling of his life traveling doing shows and the people he would meet. It was very entertaining! Our performance was in The Bedroom(612 L Street NW) so we head that way from dinner and turn from 7th street onto L to a very poorly lit block trying to find where we are supposed to go. We finally find that the address has been painted onto the side of an old warehouse-type building and the sign outside announcing the space as The Bedroom also has«redrum»(written ala The Shining) on it. Not the most settling thing when walking up to an old, formerly abandoned building on a dark city street. However, after going around the block to get our tickets and finally settling into our seats, we had a great time at the show and the staff were very friendly. It’s nice to support some of the lesser funded arts going on in DC.

Cutest theatre I’ve been to in a while. Small cozy space, decent lighting, nice warm room and decent sound. I’m definitely going to have to go back at some point for another one of their shows. And its just down the street from B&P and the metro.

In fact, this place is doing stuff year round not just during the fringe festival. Right now I know of a Clown Cabaret that comes along the second Monday of every month. I have gone to it twice and its got some really fun stuff. They also do non-fringe season shows during the year. Keep an eye on it because stuff does come through. During Fringe however this place is crazy packed. The parking lot becomes ‘The Tent’ and usually the central hub from which all of your theater viewing adventures will take place. It makes for a great meeting spot before after and during shows and you will run into a lot of the people you just saw on stage there. So, keep an eye on their calendar, see whats going on, and pop in.

Fun place. I never made it here for the happy hour, a regret, but this is a fun, random place that pops up during Fringe … many don’t know about it until it’s already taken down. Definitely hang out here when next Fringe comes around! For information about the 2010 Fort Fringe, see … the tent is only open during the Capital Fringe Festival, a yearly theater festival that’s DC’s version of Fringe(a worldwide effort to show theater not usually shown elsewhere).

A smaller venue for the Fringe Festival, they’ve got $ 4 beers you can bring in to the theater, and they’ll usually wait a few minutes after curtain time to let the stragglers get settled and grab a drink. Polite staff, and an intimate setting. I’d definitely go back here to see another edgy performance.
