TAKEOUT Only, overcooked food. The sides were tastier than the meats.

Save your money don’t go here this place isn’t good. I got wings with Mac and cheese and fries. The Mac n cheese tasted like velveeta! Not seasoned just noodles and cheese sauce. The wings were ok but the sauce was just Mumbo sauce nothing barbecue about it! And the fries were the bottom of the bag fries just little pieces of overcooked fries. I will stick with Hill country barbecue market for my barbecue.

Wasn’t that pleased. Normally I go crazy over BBQ, but I took it easy This time around. To me it just doesn’t have that real AUTHENTICBBQ flavor. I didn’t taste the«yummyness» of a charcoal or wood grill like I would at say Johnny Boys. I heard this spot used to be really good but, I must have missed it. The sides were even worst, we ordered the red beans and rice, collard greens and Mac and cheese. FAIL… FAIL…FAIL. I don’t think I will be going back here. Nice Girl was working the register though.

It’s been over a decade since we have been here. Was looking forward to some fried fish with my platter, but the fact is that the wild combo was good. I will drive from Annapolis to DC for a platter though.

Been going to this spot for like 10 years. If you’re in the area and hungry and don’t want the typical burgers & fries type of fast food, hit them up. Food is decent. I generally get the same thing when I stop past. Wing platter with hot BBQ sauce, greens, mac-n-cheese and cornbread. For under $ 10 it’s a pretty good deal. Wings off the grill have always been good. They sauce them up ok, but I usually get an extra BBQ on the side. Greens are seasoned well and the mac-n-cheese definitely isn’t what your mama would make for Thanksgiving, but they’ll pass. Folks looking for ‘real’ BBQ aren’t gonna love Hogs on the Hill. But hey, when you want to grub on a budget, you can get nice & full off one of their platters.

Hummm. So what the heck is this mumbo sauce that Washingtonians try to pass off as BBQ sauce? Or at least that’s what the sauce tasted like. Thank goodness I had them put it on the side, instead of on my chicken! I’m a country girl at heart; I was raised in a southern household, with southern grandparents, southern values and southern food. So, I know that hole-in-the-wall places have what I’m looking for. I’m simple. I just need recognizable food to taste good. Naturally, this place looked like it would fit the bill(not the taste good part though). I had a taste for BBQ, and I didn’t feel like cooking, hence my check in. I ordered half a chicken(forgettable) and sides: collards, mac and cornbread(that they should reconsider putting a price on). The collards were good, the mac was some nonsense that should never be replicated again. Over cooked and saucy(people don’t make real mac and cheese anymore? Is it too expensive? Take it off the menu then). I also had the Sweet Potato pie, which was quite possibly the best thing I ate from this carry out, although it was overly sweetened and had some strings in it(I don’t do strings, and again, if you don’t know how to make sweet potato pies without strings, you need to leave it to the professionals). .75 stars for their attempt at southern BBQ. –4.25 stars for failing at most attempts.

I’ve only tried the wings from and I would give them a 4.5. They seasoned well and they are whole wings. Nice size. Get them with the sauce on the side. The sauce is not really authentic and I think it ruins the flavor. The sides are horrible which is why I give the establishment a 2. They use canned collard greens and boxed Mac and cheese. Not cool. Zero seasoning on all the sides. They don’t even try. I even ordered just fries and somehow the messed that up. The only good side is the cornbread but hey it’s jiffy brand. Any fool can read directions. If they made some sides from scratch people would be lining up out the door. The wings are still a plus.

Decent ribs and chicken to satisfy your bbq cravings. The minced pork was horrible IMO. I prefer pulled pork/chicken from King Street Blues. The macaroni and cheese sucks(tastes like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Deluxe). I heard the greens were bad, so I didn’t even try. I would stick with fries and coleslaw. The wings are actually pretty good too. Service is fast and friendly.

Dry pulled pork. They use hot sauce on pulled pork. And their greens tasted like collard greens boiled in water. Worst $ 10 I ever spent.

After living in the neighborhood for 4 years and never stopping I finally stopped last Saturday for lunch because my parents thought it smelled amazing. WOW I’ve been missing out! I’ve had a lot of pulled pork and BBQ pork since moving to DC8 years ago and this was the best I’ve had so far! Their sauce was not typical BBQ, but I loved it! My dad had the half chicken and it was super moist and tender. I’m a decent cook myself and make a mean slower cooked pulled pork and I liked theirs better! Will defiantly go back!

I usually hate to waste money, so if I don’t like something, I try to endure it and make a mental note to not do it again. Couldn’t even do that here. I can count the amount of times I’ve thrown an entire meal away after eating less than 1⁄5th and this goes on the list. I was drawn in by the smell of bbq. I go inside, and it looks like a check cashing spot or a carryout got converted into a bbq joint. I place my order, wait about 10 minutes, then take my food home. Sigh… where to begin. The meats were 2 stars at best, which was made worse by the god awful sauce which by itself is –1 stars. It isn’t bbq sauce at all. It’s leftover sweet and sour chicken sauce, or runny ketchup or something terrible. The color and consistency should have been my warning. And the sides weren’t even grocery store deli worthy. I would have done better eating Checkers next door, which should tell you something.

When writing a review I always have to ask myself the question, «Would you ever come back?» and that determines how many stars a spot gets… I would not come back here! I was looking for some BBQ because I had been craving it for a while… like all winter… and finally I was a bit early for work and decided to stop here… Very Disappointed, all the other reviews of this place pretty much sum it up but let me reiterate for added emphasis… The SAUCE is horrible… not a true BBQ sauce, more like Mambo Sauce with smoked Paprika! The ribs werent really seasoned prior to them drowning them in the sauce!!! ewww! and the chicken had good flavor but I wouldve preferred if they left the BBQ sauce on the side! And speaking of side… the Sides were WEEEEEAK!!!

I decided to stop here because I always see it driving into DC. Uh… so it’s a BBQ shack… not what I’m used to in the south… Now…there is something that appears to be a wood burning grill inside. I actually did see the wood burning while the chicken was cooking, it appears that the ribs had already been smoked and they were heating them back up. Not sure if they were today’s or yesterday’s ribs. As far as the sides go… they ABSOLUTELY suck. The mac n cheese is out a box and the greens were undercooked and lacked seasoning. Won’t ever order a side from here again. The ribs were decent, nice smoked taste. They weren’t fall off the bone, but they weren’t tough either. The sauce was delicious. Sweet and spicy… not sure if it was homemade or not. Actually the ribs redeemed the place. My advice to you is buy the meat a la carte. Then go home and do your own veggies!

After driving by this BBQ shack 100+ times during my commute to campus, I finally decided to pop in, and see what«the hogs» had to offer. I was pleasantly surprised as I walked through the door. The menu was graphical based, and mounted on the wall. The ordering is done through plexiglass, which is good as security in that area is a priority. The smells of smoked meats were very pleasant to walk in to. The prices are comparable with most BBQ/Soul Food takeout joints. I wouldn’t say cheap eats, but the servings are very generous for the price. I opted for the Ribs & Chicken combo platter, which comes with two sides(Red Beans & Rice and Mac & Cheese) and a square of cornbread. The order was up within minutes, and the gal behind the counter was very friendly. The Ribs were the star of the show, as they were smoked to perfection, and had a beautiful bark on them. The BBQ chicken drumsticks didn’t quite please the palate, but the chicken was cooked properly. As others have mentioned, the sauce is heavy. They do give you the option of having the sauce on the side, and if you prefer mild or spicy. The spicy didn’t trigger any fire alarms, but did have a great flavor. The shame of the adventure were the side dishes. The RB&Rice tasted like Zatarains, and lacked the sauce that can really make a RB&R dish memorable. It looks like they add small diced pieces of the BBQ pork in the dish, which doesn’t come close to saving it. The M&C also tasted like it was out of the box, and wasn’t memorable at all. The cornbread was soft enough, but lacked that nice flavor that you would expect. I could understand if they had a cafeteria-like volume, but with a lower patron total, there is no excuse for not putting passion into these dishes. It may be even cheaper to make the dishes from scratch, as the staples are low-cost in general. They do have a sheltered area outside for all their firewood, so at least their smoking convention is legit. The ribs alone are worth making a return trip, and maybe. just maybe, the side dishes will be made with love at that time.

Nicely done remodeling inside and out. I ordered ribs, mac & cheese. red beans & rice and cornbread. I have no complaints. I brought the food home, added my own blend of sauce(BBQ and Steak sauce) and enjoyed the meal. Great price, Great service and Great location. I will return!!!

Came highly recommended from my coworkers. I’m a sucker for collard greens and barbecue, so I was excited. The inside looks like a bank in a third world country. It was only missing an armed guard in a booth. I was slightly disappointed with the food. It had all the requisites for being good, but I felt underwhelmed. I’ll probably go back just because there isn’t anything else good in the area, but that’s not saying much.

My first impression of this place is that it was pretty good. I got the pulled pork sandwich with what I believe was their spicier sauce, and some cole slaw. I asked for the slaw in the sandwich but they put it on the side… meh. The pork was good quality and the sauce was pretty tasty. The bun also held up well to the sauce. This place is in a run-down part of town, but unless you come here at night you’ll be fine. Stop over at the Arboretum to eat. It’s not really destination dining, more like somewhere to get some food before heading out on a road trip on US-50.

I’ve seen this place dozens of times while traveling down Bladensburg Road, and finally stopped by last week. It’s your typical DC restaurant; bullet-proof glass, no sitting area, grimy floor, the works. The only thing I cared about, though, was the BBQ. Which was awful. The sauce is a dark-salmon color; a goopy, gummy mess. Like corn syrup or ketchup in texture, I’m pretty sure it contains both. However, the CHIEF crime here, and the cardinal sin among BBQ purists, is the marinade process. There simply was none, and while the respective chicken or ribs may be adequately cooked, the sauce is simply slopped on top without any time to penetrate. Halfway through my meal, I began wiping off the sauce to get at the better-tasting, untainted meat beneath. Likewise, their collard greens are overly stewed, the cornbread is oddly smooth, and their potato salad is mashed, whipped, and BLENDED… something I’ve only experienced at this particular restaurant. I don’t like giving poor reviews, but this place is an anomaly. I’m hoping for good BBQ in DC, but it doesn’t look good so far.

This place issued its siren call to every time I passed it on New York Ave. It has all the hallmarks of truly great BBQ. It’s a shack, it smells like smoke, and it’s not in a terribly good neighborhood. I sometimes demur from using the the term«hole in the wall» to describe a place, it seems a little too pejorative for what I see as a positive trait, lack of pretense. But, to be honest, this place is a hole in the wall(in a good way of course). There is a 10′ by 5′ waiting area, an order window complete with bullet proof glass, and a shabby wall menu and drink cooler. There is a tiny lot, which is sometimes also occupied by patrons of the checkers right in front of this place. The place is purely takeout, and when I was there on a week day lunch hour, it had a line nearly out the door. Every indication thus far is that this place was going to be a winner. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with slaw, and some greens. Despite the line I had my meal within ten minutes of arrival. The sandwich had copious amounts of pork and sauce served on a typical hamburger bun. Here is my single complaint on the place. The single most important part of a BBQ place is their sauce, and I just wasn’t impressed. It looked like a ketchup and vinegar based sauce and was a little spicy and sweet, but not terribly impressive. It had a really bright color, like the color of Chinese takeout sweet and sour sauce. I’m pretty sure it was homemade, which is a major plus, but man, this stuff is not winning any prizes. I certainly see myself returning, especially for provisions for picnics across the street at the Arboretum. But if your a BBQ lover, you won’t be coming here for a bbq high, this is more of a bbq methadone. Enough to dull the pain of your urges, but not quite enough to satisfy.
