small like the size of someone’s basement. neat design of a circular bar. interesting crowd, pretty diverse — asian, white, black, hispanic, you name it. extremely crowded and packed since squeezing everyone into a tiny compact area(I guess real estate in gtown is expensive and limited). decent seating along the borders of the club. super tiny dance floor that’s jammed pack with people — everyone’s rubbing against and brushing up against each other — quite nauseating when the nasty freaky classless ghetto ones are rubbed up against you.

Spent a Saturday night here for my high school reunion. Pros: I like the circular bar and the staff was friendly. Cons: There is usually a cover. There are many more happening places in DC that don’t charge a cover.

I’ve been here twice and really don’t know why. It’s a basement trying to be upscale and trendy. The circular bar is cool, and they do have a decent size dance floor for Georgetown area bars. However, drinks are expensive and the crowd is just not that great.

Came here with a group — it was a decent stop, definitely some fun was had, but I’m not sure if I would come back if we had to wait in line or pay cover. The bar set up is pretty cool — you sit on a little ottoman-like seat, and the is set a few feet below the floor level, with the bottles stacked on a big pillar rising to the ceiling. It looks interesting, and the big circle bar makes it much easier to order drinks than most places. The drinks were a little more expensive than most other places, though, but if you’re relying on the bar’s drinks to get you going, you must be a rookie. The orange low lit lighting makes for a trendy-feeling décor as well. In the back, there is a small dance floor. It was fun over there — good crowd, good dancing, people feeling the vibe. The music wasn’t very good, but oh well. Plus, this is one of the few places in D.C. where they have a dancing girl(s). I was surprised to see that, but she’s just on a platform to the side of the dance floor, with no protection at all. I wonder how safe that gets when people inevitably get too drunk. Minus one bonus point: in the men’s restroom, the«urinal» is actually a wall with water running down it and a small troph at the bottom. At first I thought maybe I was peeing on the wall, but no, I made sure. Very strange.

This place was okay. I’ve been here two times. Once I was looking for a friend and the other time I came here and the place wasn’t as busy as you’d expect a club in Georgetown to be. They have a circular bar when you walk down the stairs to their main and only room, which is kind of like a basement. The drinks were expensive. $ 11 for a Long Island, and average $ 12 for any mixed drink. I expected it to be a little cheaper, but the drinks were strong because of the size of the glasses didn’t allow a lot of toppings to be put into the drinks. The dance floor was great, the music and lights did match up and that was pretty cool as a lot of clubs don’t do that. This was a place that seemed to cater more towards birthdays and parties, and less towards the singles that come in and dance. This place was okay, but it isn’t the hole in the wall that I was expecting.

I came here on a Friday night thinking it would be packed. I strolled in around 12:30 and it was dead… literally there were like 5 people. The bartender felt bad and gave us free drink passes to come next time but not sure if I want to come again. There was no cover so it was okay, if there was a cover I would have been pissed…

This place is def an asian lounge. haha lots of asians and its a cool vibe. When it gets packed its gets really hot. They play decent music and can be good times. Parking is very difficult to find as most DC /Georgetown clubs are.

If you love asians, come to Modern! If you like being able not to breathe and move around, come to Modern! If you love overpriced drinks, come to Modern! If you are sane, don’t go to Modern!

This place is okay. The best thing about it is definitely the bar set up and décor. Modern is located in Georgetown and it considered one of the«hipper» lounges in DC. I am not sure if it is one of the hipper lounges but it was pretty cool. It is a basement lounge and the bar is in the middle. There is a dancefloor in the back of the lounge with seating adjacent to it. There is also seating along two main walls which is rare. The lighting and colors of the lounge were decent. It gave it a dive bar feel but maintained its hipness. The music was okay, and the drinks were not that great. The bartender was pretty quick with the drinks, but they are overpriced and there is hardly any alcohol in them. The beer specials are okay for the beer drinker(s) in your group. The best way to reach Modern is to walk across the Key Bridge from Rosslyn to M Street. 10 – 15 minute walk. The walk is beautiful.

Bitchy bartender alert! My vodka soda was missing vodka and the bartender was rude. You would think they’d work harder at cracking a smile to get a bigger tip. Crowd was very young, mostly college. Then there are the pedophiles lingering in the corner, preying on the young and drunks. Yuck. One star bc music was decent. And that’s all. Btw this was a Friday night… But I would imagine its ghetto any night.

Friday night is Asian night so be prepared to party it up in Chinatown because that is what it will look like. =). Likes: — There is rarely ever a long line. — Cover is no more than $ 10; Free cover if you know the«password» — Tables are cheaper here than most other spots in DC. However, the next time you order that bottle of Grey, make sure they pop it open in front of you otherwise you don’t know what you’re getting, and could be feeling that Aristocrat in the morning. — One of the few places you can roll in wearing kicks/sneaks. Dislikes: — The music can be a hit or miss. — Rookies trying to sit at your table or leaving their coats/jackets in your area. «Coat check is across the way, rookie.» — Grabbers, Creepers, and Odd Creatures

«Old Faithful,» is what me and a couple of my buddies call it. It’s a pretty decent spot. The cover is never more than about $ 10 unless you have the«password»(which is usually some corny popular music lyric or song), and the line is NEVER long. A mix of top 40 and sometimes some ol skool dance mixes. It tends to get a bit crowded but very manageable, to get around. The main bar usually has 2 people working it, but can be difficult to get a drink at times. This place is great for those looking for«nothing else to do, don’t have on my best outfit on, we’ll get there at 12 cuz they close at 3, and its cheap» nights.

Came in here on a Saturday night at 11… and our first impression was that it was poppin! Its a fairly small spot, but the dance floor was full, a few empty booths and bartenders were hustling in a «pit» bar. DJ was on point with new and classic hip hop. Crowd very diverse. All is looking right… But then, wait a minute… what is going on? 30 people literally soul trained right out of the club. En masse. WTH? Did someone fart on the dance floor? Turns out the club was«packed» with a single barhopping birthday crew. Once they rolled out, there was a sad 20 or so people left. We tried to stay and fight the good fight because the DJ was doing thangs, but we had to throw in the towel 15 mins later. Wack is wack. I don’t know if that is typical for Georgetown on a Saturday night, but my guess is no… so… ontothenext!

It would really be 4.5 stars, but I figured I’d give them the upper end rather than the lower end. Modern is by far my favorite spot in D.C. on Saturday nights. It’s off the regular path of clubs, but worth the trek. Parking is typical Georgetown-neighborhood street parking or there is a lil lot a couple streets away that charges $ 15/night. The bouncers are nice(and most of them are pretty easy on the eyes) and if you’re willing to get there before 11, you can get in with no cover with a password. On Saturdays this place does not get poppin’ til 12 or 12:30, but hang in there, it will happen. Once you’re inside, you can take note of the nice décor and sunken, circular bar. The bartenders are all really sweet, attentive, and make good drinks. The music is great on Saturdays– mostly current, grooveable hip-hop with some old school awesomeness mixed in. There is always a diverse crowd of people, which I love. The ladies bathroom is always clean, and there is never a line.

I’ve been to Modern fairly often, and a couple weekends ago was the first time I’ve ever ordered table service. It was a Saturday. This is my story. If you’re going to get a table at Modern, get ready to turn into Mantracker. I began sending emails to two different addresses and leaving voicemails at three phone numbers on Tuesday morning. By Thursday night I hadn’t heard anything back from management, so I had to drag my ass to Georgetown and make the reservation in person. The manager, Eric, is a very cool guy who takes care of his customers as long as you can hunt him down. So be forewarned. Since it was a surprise party for my wife, I got to the lounge very early. Like most clubs in DC, the DJ was playing fantastic music while the place was empty — using turntables, mixing, and playing good music. When the crowd shows up, the turntables and good music are exchanged for the iPod and an unending parade of auto-tuned and barely-danceable musical farts. Every dance club in DC does this, so I’m convinced that it’s management enforcing the«LET’S MAKEANAUDIOBORTIONAFTER11PM» rule and not the DJs. Can’t blame them for using iPods — I wouldn’t soil my $ 3,000 decks with a Fergie album, either. I like table service at Modern because the waitresses/servers(generally) give very prompt service and aren’t dressed like whores. That way I can tip them generously without feeling like I’ve been suckered by some woman of vaguely Asian/Latino descent parading her tits in my face and wearing slorts that betray her delusion of having a respectable ass. Male club owners dress their female staff like whores in the belief that it’ll lead male patrons to spend more to give off a «baller» vibe. What it actually does is encourage men to close their wallets out of spite. I digress. Many people are surprised to learn that Georgetown is one of the fightin’est neighborhoods in D.C., and Modern is no exception. Several guys tried to start a fight with a friend of mine when their drunk female companions kept hitting on him and following him around the dance floor, and later two enormous dudes tried responded to another friend’s apology for running into them by grabbing him by the shirt and yelling«WATCHYOURSELF, BRO!» To the credit of Modern’s security, all those dudes were thrown out of the establishment with shocking efficiency. And speaking of efficiency, the main bar is surprisingly quick and attentive even when the place is crowded. They’ve had good bartenders at Modern for years. Kudos to you. Finally like most places in D.C., the women are fairly snobbish with the exception of the cougars — and Modern is usually swarming with them on Saturdays. If you insist on pursuing women under the age of 35, know this: –Don’t expect any love from the White girls here unless you’re Barack Obama’s ball washer. –Don’t expect any love from the Black girls unless you’re Barack Obama. –Don’t expect any love from the Asian girls unless you’re White.

I’m impressed. Although its a bit small for my taste and I had to wait in this corny ass line outside in the cold in 4 inch heels… I liked the place. Let me tell you exactly what impressed me… clean bathrooms. Me… I absolutely hate public restrooms. Everytime I pop a squat… I cant help but to imagine what was on the toilet seat before I used it… pee droppings… sh** droppings… pubes…vomit…eww…but I have to admit this bathroom… or at least the stall I was in… was very very clean. I also loved the circular bar that took up ¾ths of the entire club. The music was ok… but if I hear Yeah by Usher at another club I am going to scream. There is some great music out and they play Yeah… seriously? Ugh. Plus there was a sign that let us ALL know that the DJ does not take requests… Ugh x2. How corny. Overall, I had a good time with the boytoy… I’ll be back and definitely before 12. Before you go, make sure you check out that password on their website or you’re stuck with a $ 10 cover at the door.

I confess. I am indeed a fan. I’ve had a wide array of experiences here over the years from WTF to FTW. Went this past Friday around 9 til I don’t remember when. This time it was FTW and therefore there are things I do not remember, but here’s what I DO remember: 1. We ordered drinks at the bar, went outside/came back in, our seats were gone of course but the bartender rescued our drinks for us?! He handed them back over the bar and we headed to… 2. a reserved table by the dance floor that was NOT reserved for us — sat down anyway, right next to a bouncer. Did he kick us out? No. Score. When the party finally came, he rather politely moved us to another table… 3. where we had some champagne with some new friends, the service was very attentive while we talked over… 4. the music which was not too loud but in my opinion not that great either. I guess i can’t expect a club in Georgetown to bust out the IAMX. So all in all a great night at Modern. Will be back.

Modern, you were once pretty cool, but not no mo’. DJ, be honest… were you using Pandora for music? The music played all the way to the end, brief silence and then the next track started. Wow.(smh) And you had the nerve to charge us $ 10 each for that?! Boooo!
