The restored Tivoli Theatre is a DC treasure and a wonderful venue to see a play in Columbia Heights. Home to the Gala Hispanic Theatre, I have seen wonderful dramatic and musical performances there, most recently a play by Lope de Vega, who can justly be compared to William Shakespeare, only more prolific. Works done in Spanish always include«surtitles» in English above the stage. I’m not sure what the architect’s vision was for the theatre restoration because the ornate ceiling and other details clearly indicate that the Tivoli was once a beautiful old time playhouse. However, to a create more intimate performance space, a floor was added in such a way that you’re much closer to that ceiling. The theatre space itself is somewhat small but with quite comfortable seats that don’t really have bad views of the stage at all. In fact if you need to read the surtitles it might be better to be 6 or 7 rows back so you can read while still focusing on the actors. Parking in the garage attached to the Giant is free with validation and here’s another tip: instead of exiting to the ground level and going back up to the parking decks, just exit the theatre from the back of the house, and you’ll be right there at the parking.
