My daughters 1987 Delta 88 Olds was having problems running. At times the car would just stop running but would start right back up. I called Scarbrough Automotive and explained to Dennis that this is a very old rusty car with high mileage and that we did not want to put a lot into it. He offered to take a look at it for free. We left the car there Thursday night Sept 182008. I was instructed to leave the keys in an envelope and I deposited them through an access hole in the garage door. Friday Sept 19 I called and spoke to the owner Dennis Scarbrough he said he would have an answer for me soon in the early afternoon and he would call me soon. I verified he received the trunk and ignition keys. He never called that afternoon. So, my wife and I actually went to the business as he said he would have the answer as to what was wrong that afternoon and said he would call but never did. When we got there his mechanic was looking at the car he said. I called late that Friday and was told it was the Mass air flow sensor and he isn’t able to find a used one so it would be $ 100. and he would not be able to repair it until Monday. That Saturday my daughter called from Cedar Falls and said I need my car to get to both of my part time jobs. So again my wife and I drove up to take my daughter to work some 70 mile drive for us. We went to the car dealership and her car was outside. I used my spare to start the car and took it to my daughter. No one was at the business. I left a recorded message for Dennis that we picked up the car as she needed it or would lose her job and we would return it on Monday. On Monday I called Dennis as I never heard from him and he told me on the phone that I owed him for the repair some $ 200. I said what repair the car was not to be repaired until Monday you told us. You also told me it was $ 100. He then replied to bring the car in and he would remove the part, he then hung up on me. I took the car to Advanced auto parts and they told me Scarbrough installed a re-manufactured part on our vehicle and it wasn’t even installed correctly. My wife and I did not want to confront Mr. Scarbrough as he became very angry on the phone. So we sent a check for $ 175 and asked him if he could send the keys to us. He did cash the check. Two weeks went by and no keys came in the mail. I called the business and left a polite message that we need the keys as my daughter can not get into the trunk. several more weeks went by and nothing. I called again and spoke to an employee who said that Dennis was at lunch. I explained to him how many times I called long distance and we would like the car keys as Dennis cashed the check for $ 175 for a $ 50 part. Plus again I explained my daughter can not get into the trunk if she has a flat tire. Still 2 weeks go by up to this time and no keys, no phone call or anything from Dennis Scarbrough. We had no signed contract with this business to perform repairs.
