Walked in, saw a display model hand-hewn beam for a fireplace mantel. Asked if we could buy it — owner was grateful for business and very sweet about selling the display to us. It looks fantastic and we get compliments all the time. Never would this happen in a big box store, nor would they have the product. Awesome place if you are doing custom work.

Jackel offers a selection of hardwoods (less now than they used to, admittedly) at *fantastic* prices. Local woodworkers should give them a visit.

Santa Cruz, CA

Jackel is a specialty lumber store located between Monterey/Carmel and Santa Cruz, CA with San Jose and the whole SanFran Bay Area just a few miles further. They have a fabulous selection of hard and soft woods for furniture building and construction… their selection in size and width PLUS the fact that they have a mill right on site would warrent a full 5 STARS except that the guy running it is a total pompus jerk… and well perhaps he should be since his collection is so very fine… not cheap but the premium material should get premium price… so I adveraged it out: 5 for the wood, 1 for the rude/idiot owner… since there’s only one of him and LOADS of great lumber, I gave Jackel 3 full stars, the wood winning the half star edge… Personally, I ended up buying elsewhere. I’m too old to put up with being talked down to *shrug*
