The late William D. Walsh, whose name adorns the large library building on Fordham College’s historic Rose Hill(FCRH) campus from which he graduated after studying Greek and Latin there, in due course collected works of terra cota, marble, bronze and other mediums from the historic civilizations which spoke those languages, and ultimately donated them to his alma mater where today they form the core of the museum that bears his name. By the time Walsh(1930 – 2013) was old enough to collect it was difficult to(legally) acquire first rate pieces, nonetheless the items he and other donors(notably the anonymous party who presented Byzantine mosaics) have contributed form a valuable educational collection well worth a visit, particularly at this time in history when the remains of these civilizations are being so savagely destroyed by some other cultures. FCRH is easy to reach from Manhattan via public transit and has its own(paid) parking facility across from the New York Botanical Garden as well; museum admission is free, but visitors without a Fordham affiliation are only welcome during business hours, Monday-Friday, and must present identification to enter both the campus in general and the library building in particular.
