Whoever was working the cash register on aisle 6 around 2pm today, shorted me 10 dollars on my change. I paid w/a 50. I was due back 12 dollars, and the cashier handed me cash all crumpled w/the receipt. I was in a hurry, so I didn’t count the $. I put it in my pocket, trusting she gave me proper change. 30 minutes later, I reached into my pocket, and found the receipt and two singles. She didn’t give me the 10. I won’t accuse of theft, maybe it was an honest mistake, the computer only flashes the exact amount of change due, so it’s possible her eyesight malfunctioned, or maybe she was confused and thought that I was leaving her a tip. Combine that w/the watery frozen foods, the deli lady who had a sneezing fit over the coldcuts, and it’s clear that I won’t return.

The people of West Hartford deserve a better Big Y than this one… I went here last night for the first time since I moved out of WeHa four years ago. I was searching for the«Tonight Dough» Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor, but of course, they did not have it. Compared to other locations, their hot food station sucks and they have none of their famous fish and chips or their famous fried chicken. There is no comfortable eating station too. This location should be remodeled and look like the Guilford, CT location. A redeeming value of this location is their HUGE kosher section, which is great for Passover Seder shopping. When those items are on clearance, I come out with lots of Passover Manischewitz products. I go here because the grocery stores near me have virtually no kosher sections. Luckily for WeHa people in Bishop’s Corner, there are better places to shop like Crown Market, Whole Foods, and Walmart Marketplace.

I’m not a huge fan of the big Y coin thing, and this store has a bit of a strange layout– really narrow aisles, elevation changes– and because of its size there’s not a great selection of ethnic foods(ex: not a single indian option). But, it has a decent selection of your standard options(including the winter-only flavors of polar sparking water, which I came here for) and friendly workers. I did find some beef jerky with those coupons stuck to them that either come from the manufacturer or are put on by the store, and found out at the register that they had expired months ago. Luckily it was jerky, so I didn’t worry too much about that meaning they’d been sitting on the shelf for months, but I thought it was strange they wouldn’t honor the coupon in that case. It was on the products on their shelves. I’m not going to make a big deal over $ 1 in the store, but it just seemed strange that the automatic response wasn’t to give me the $ 1 off. It’s principle :)

I would say Big Y is a step above Wal Mart(1 star) and a step below Whole Foods. They don’t seem to have the best quality stuff but the staff are friendly. Prices are in the middle(cheaper than Whole Foods but more than Wal mart). Big plus on it being American owned(that gets its own star).

Big y is a large chain grocery store. The staff is usually friendly. They vary everything Crown and whole foods don’t sell. They also have a Glatt kosher section if you’re Jewish. Overall it’s a good grocery store. The bakery has good cookies and their freshly made food and it’s good too. Check them out–

Decent grocery store in West Hartford. A little different from other groceries stores. Gluten free options are integrated into the normal options, so for example if you’re looking for gluten free pasta it will be where all the pasta is. Parking lot in the front.

We shop here at least once each week or two. We live closer to two other Supermarkets, but take advantage of the many buy one get two or blue dot meat specials. I absolutely love their glazed apple fritters, my biggest problem is finishing them before someone else gets a chance. The people, including the Managers have always been so helpful, I don’t know where some of these comments come from. During the summer it’s nice to be able to see the vegetables we buy coming from local farms. I am sure the local farmers love the Big Y for the support they get. Today we purchased a pizza, yes, taking advantage of one of the silver coins we had. It was half cheese and half sausage and mushroom. It was very good for lunch. I just stuck the last two pieces on my pizza stone and reheated, to be honest they tasted as good as some of the pizza joints we have in Town, and we do have our fill. We ordered a cake a couple of months ago, it turned out delicious everyone visiting loved it.

Big Y is where I go if Stop and Shop has crappy deals. It has a great selection and the Big Y World Class Deli Meats are all natural free-range and infinitely lower sodium than any other deli meat, and it’s cheaper too!!! They have a good selection of everything — cheeses importantly — and occasionally you will run into a person carting samples of food around. The other day it was lobster rolls! They sell local farm-grown vegetables during the summer months, and it’s always nice to support local growers. I like Big Y, but like S&S, the prices are just too high on things like boneless chicken and ground beef and chips to not go to Trader Joe’s, Shop Rite, Stew Leonard’s, WalMart, etc. etc.

Just OK. I really have not found this grocery chain to have qualities that I prefer. I get kind of annoyed by the fact I am always being given coins.(The membership rewards program), and to take advantage of certain pricing, I have to bring these coins with me. They should just lower prices a bit and cease that ridiculous promotion. No one needs another form of currency. I could see it if they simply added them to the profile on your Big Y card. That makes me think they have extraordinarily high breakage on this promotion. Meaning, most customers never redeem them, and that they can advertise certain things at prices that only a select few organized shoppers can take advantage of.

I thought it was going to be great when I heard Food Mart was changing hands to Big Y, but boy was u wrong! I don’t get it, affluent community, great high traffic location! They did no renovations, don’t have enough help, dont carry many popular brands, and are often out of items you count on. It is such a shame. I am wondering if a good store will ever do right by this community! Oh, and i really don’t get the coin thing. do i really want to carry around these store coins so i can get discounts occasionally, my purse isn’t full and heavy enough? what is up with that. Why not have a regular rewards card like every other store? Hate this place!!!

Better than the Shop Rite it was before, but the deli and bakery still have much to be desired. Use it for stocking your cabinets, not so much the fridge. Not laid out well, but if you actually collect the coins they give out you can find some good deals. I use it to get the essentials, plus their chicken salad in the prepared food sction is awesome. Overall I’m glad it’s here, but I find better items and service at Whole Foods.
