I stopped going here a few years ago and started using the stop and shop instead. The customer service department is really dicey, the cashiers have foul mouths, the police presence is an every day deal. I feel bad for the college kids that have to use this place. Not a safe shopping experience, and I won’t be returning.

Racist employees. This review is long overdue. I was working in the area around Eastertime and decided to stop in to see about their ham/turkey prepared meals. There was no one available at the deli counter to ask, but I did see a young caucasian male stocking away produce. I decided to ask him if he knew if the store would be offering a fully prepared meal. His response was«like what? fried chicken?» I said: «no, ham or turkey». I don’t recall his response, however remembered walking away thinking why would I want fried chicken for my Easter dinner? Call me naïve, but it wasn’t until I left the store that I realized what he was implying. Had it dawned on me at the time, I would’ve gotten his name and reported him to store management immediately.

Every Sunday morning like clockwork. I get to my laptop to apply the new Shoprite digital e-coupons to my Shoprite savings card. I’ve gotten many free or inexpensive items using Shoprite e-coupons combined with manufacturer coupons. If i can share anything, please link your card to your online account to save MAJOR cash. As I was choosing my coupons this morning, I realized I have never reviewed my local Shoprite… I was EXTREMELY disappointed to see one particular review detailing the type of clientele that shop here. Um, really? If you mean, human beings wanting to save cash… then yes. I definitely am included in there with my pile of coupons and have NO problem taking home free items to my family. :-) Moving on… Shoprite will get nothing but glowing reviews from me. I really missed out on major savings for my household by having Stop&Shop be my regular grocer simply because it was in my own neighborhood. My wallet and stomach are both happy I’ve made the change to Shoprite. The produce is FAR superior at Shoprite. Our recent trip was 90% produce items… all wonderful and healthy options! The butchers have gone out of their way to make sure I’ve gotten the exact cuts of meats that I need for any certain recipe. Also, They’ve suggested cuts that would work better for a certain cooking method. The shelves are consistently well stocked and if you do happen to need a raincheck the helpful customer service staff are willing and able to assist your needs. During any shopping trip, I have found the aisles being swept or cleaned. I have to keep myself out of the lovely bakery department since it smells AMAZING throughout the entire store. Their wooden cart fully stocked with muffins every morning is simply adorable and always catches my eye. The cake sold by the slice is a great idea for those times you just want a bite of deliciousness! I’ve never had a problem at check-out. Everyone has always been patient while I scan my card and my pile of coupons. If anything ever needs an override, the managers are willing to scan the card without an eye roll(which I’ve gotten at other stores) I can keep going with my glowing review, but please go for yourself and you’ll see that this store has everything you need to meet your shopping needs… and more!

Before the Walmart came to West Haven, Shoprite was the place to shop! I went there at least twice a month, sometimes three times. Great food, great prices, great customer service!

I travel from Branford in order to shop at this store. Worth the trip A+ The employees are helpful, the store is extremely clean and the prices are awesome, considerably cheaper than the competition. The manager, Todd is a very hands on guy, always walking around and waiting on customers and keeping a good number of cashiers always open so the wait time when checking out is at a minimal. The items on sale never run out in the store. The bakery is clean and excellent. Once you try the store you will be hooked. The manager even makes a special mailing of the weekly circular to our home address so that we know of the weekly sales and coupons. He could do the same for you, just ask. Again, this store blows the competition away. If you have a family, as I do, you owe it to yourself to try this store. A+ rating from a family in Branford CT.

I think that Shop Rite of West Haven generally gets a bad rap. The location is in a semi-urban section of town, across from the University of New Haven, so it’s on a main road and the parking area isn’t perfectly maintained. The general sentiment that I’ve encountered is that it’s in a run down area. The prices at Shop Rite are great however. I went recently after not visiting for several years, and it looks like they remodeled the interior. The inside is indeed nicer than it appears from the exterior. There was an employee sweeping the aisles when I was there and I thought that the store was clean, organized, and well lit. The aisles are very wide and the store has a very spacious feel to it. A highlight is the produce department. Selection and prices were both very good. They had a nice variety of fruits and vegetables, including some more unusual items like guavas and papayas. The cashier was efficient and the line moved rapidly. Prior to checking out I signed up for a Shop Rite card, which took only two minutes, and the young lady working at the customer service counter was genuinely friendly. I will definitely return to this location, especially for produce and possibly to do more extensive shopping. During this visit I intended to grab only a few items, but ended up leaving with around 20 things because prices were so good that I couldn’t pass them up.

The prices here are far better than stop & shop and have a great variety. I’ve also found the produce to be better than stop & shop most of the time. The cashiers are usually young kids who do seem miserable to be working(but what high school kid likes working at a grocery store). On the other hand, I’ve had other staff members who we’re on the floor stocking ask me if they could help me find something, when i was wandering around looking lost for one item. And I do agree that the neighborhood and prices will bring out some of the less… socially able… people, but the prices and quality of product is worth it.

I call this store the«Ghetto Grocer.» In West Haven there are two big grocery stores — Stop n Shop and Shoprite. One type of person goes to one store, and a totally different type goes to the other. ‘Nuff said. Shoprite generally has better sales than Stop n Shop, which is the only reason I ever enter this store at all. But I’ve had bad experiences with finding packaged items sorely out of date(try meringue cookies 8 months out of date b/c of course the clientele at this store isn’t going to buy $ 4 meringue cookies, of all things). I’ve had a checkout clerk throw my apples into the grocery bag. Mostly its a matter of seeing that the employees really don’t want to be working there. The overall atmosphere is just DARK. However, as I said, they do have good sales so sometimes, if you hold your nose, it’s worth it.
