Very nice people, very mediocre food. I don’t know what more to say.

We tried this place with a Groupon. My dates butternut squash place was very good, whereas my chicken fettuccine Alfredo was a little less than ‘eh’. Kind of bland and uninspired. It tasted mostly like cream. The French onion soup tasted like minestrone. The ‘full bar’ was a couple of drinks. I opted for wine, but only had two choices a cheap red or cheap white. My menu had a Mexican menu in it. Apparently I could have ordered a few Mexican dishes, but my date couldn’t. The place was a little smokey from sharing the kitchen. The waitresses were friendly but were so young it was apparent they did not know much about providing service. Ultimately, if this place would lower their prices from 10 – 13 plates to 6 – 10 they would be priced appropriately for portion size, service, and poor ambiance. I gave three because I left full and they were nice, just missing the mark off what could be a great neighborhood jewel. Groupon users note, after you use your groupon they automatically add a tip on without telling you and don’t bring back a tab that shows you it has been done. Then then when I wanted to make sure that was the case(so I didn’t under tip due to error) the waitress was obviously afraid to come back to my table as I had to waive her over when she wouldn’t come over at 2 – 3 polite head nods. That part was a little funny, I felt bad that the poor girl thought I was going to yell or freak out. I would have given more tip if she would have handled it better.

I rarely go out for Italian(I had a Sicilian boyfriend who was also a chef) so for the most part, going out for Italian food usually ends in disappointment and last night was no different. My mom invited me to head out to West Jordan to use a Groupon she had for Maurilio’s, along with my dad and husband. We arrived around 7:30pm on a Friday night to a nearly empty large dining room. We were seated, ordered our drinks, and looked over the menu. My mom and I ordered margaritas which were actually pretty good, and the makeshift bruchetta they bring to the table was decent. I ordered the chicken parmesan with angelhair, my husband got some kind of seafood pasta dish, my mom got an angelhair pasta and shrimp dish, and my dad got the tbone steak. The starter salads were kinda sad with what tasted like watered down ranch dressing on top. Out of the 4 dishes, my husband was the only one who liked his and some parts were scalding hot while the other side of the plate was lukewarm. My mom said hers was bland, and her shrimp looked pretty bland and under seasoned. My poor dad ended up with something kind of resembling a steak, it was super tough and over cooked on some parts, and bleeding on other parts. There was no bone in it, and it was really thin. My chicken parm was really weird, while the marinara sauce seemed to be homemade, nothing tasted fresh. The chicken tasted frozen, the cheese on top was barely melted like it came from the microwave, and tasted like Swiss cheese rather than parm or mozzarella or even provolone. Was pretty nasty really. I took a couple bites and I was done, my moms plate looked about the same. There was one server working, and she was nice enough, but as more people filed in she was a bit overwhelmed and things started slacking as far as refills for my dad and hubby. Even with a Groupon, our total was nearly $ 80(they add tip for you), most all the entrée’s are $ 10 and over, which seems pretty steep for the quality they give you. We just put it on the list of places we won’t be going back to.

Was there for a small party and I must say, I am pretty impressed! The décor is a little bit dated, and there wasn’t much wiggle room, but we were there for the food, which did not disappoint. The salad was a bit plain, not enough dressing for my taste, but not a big deal. I ordered the Chicken Piccata, which was delicious. Big serving with lots of flavor. The mashed potatoes were my favorite part, the texture was just right. The service was excellent. Really nice and attentive waiters. I would definitely go there again!

We have been coming to this restaurant at least a dozen times or more since they opened over two years ago. *Excellant Italian Restaurant* The food is very good — truely authentic. The complimentary bread is very good and tasty, as well as the side salads. The main course was excellant this time as well as the other times that I have been there. Our waitress was very good and right there with our drinks and food and she made valuable suggestions. The desserts are out of this world. The building is very authetic and very clean. The restaurant is family owned. The prices are definitely reasonable! They have Two Great Beers Micro Brews on tap CZEH Pilsener & Viennese Lager from The Bohemian Brewery & Wine Available. check it out for yourself — you won’t be sorry

Salad is more like a cheap cole slaw. Tasteless. Guys, don’t fudge the reviews, that’s not ethical. If anyone gives more than three stars to this place they were probably paid to do so… or they were homeless, and the restaurant probably gave them free food for the review.(No offense to previous reviewers) No offense to the stellar staff either who were very kind and accomodating.

Sorry to burst everyone’s bubble, but Maurillo’s is a big fail. I hate to be a hater here, especially because the staff was so nice and attentive. If I were only rating this place based on the service, I would give it 4 stars, but I am obligated to rate the food here. Upon arriving at Maurillo’s(keep in mind I was motivated to drive approx. 30 minutes just to get here based on the 4 ½ star Unilocal reviews). I was greeted by a friendly lady and seated in the near empty restaurant. Granted it was close to closing time, so I can understand the lack of business… however, I think there may have been other reasons for the dismal crowd. I ordered the chicken parm, thinking that I would be playing is safe with this common Italian dish. I was quickly brought a small lonely roll on a big dish. It was served warm, however I noticed that it tasted a bit stale. Then my salad came out. It was fine… no real issue there. Finally, the chicken parm was served. The dish was not much to look at, and it was served with sliced carrots and broccoli(which I thought was a bit strange, but no biggie). The cheese looked like it was barely melted on and the chicken tasted like the frozen variety, not fresh. There was also a thin slice of ham under the cheese, which I didn’t expect considering that chicken parm usually doesn’t come with ham. Still not a big deal. The big problem was that the sauce was primarily made from what tasted like carrot purée, rather than tomato. This was just weird and wrong on so many levels. The sauce is a main staple in Italian cooking… and if you mess it up, the dish is ruined. Maurilio’s cannot call themselves an Italian restaurant if they are using carrot purée as a substitute for tomatoes in their sauce. But it wasn’t just the sauce that was the problem, it was the quality and presentation of the entire dish. I just didn’t feel like a lot of time and preparation was involved and it felt like I could get the same type of chicken parm at a cheap diner for about $ 5 dollars less. My meal came out to almost $ 14 bucks, for just the chicken parm. Well, I’m sorry to say, but Maurillo’s does not deserve 4 ½ stars. Not in a million years. I am a big Italian food fan. I have been to Italy 3 times and have eaten Italian food all over the country. Maurillo’s, while having nice service, does not deliver in the tasty food category. Maybe I just happened to come in on an off night, but I don’t think I will be back again to test that theory.

I must give a ‘ditto’ to almost all of the other reviews. Our dining experience at Maurillo’s was very nice. My wife had the Fettuccine Alfredo with blackened chicken and I had the Chicken Diablo. Both were delicious, well prepared dishes. The bread and salad before the entrée were fabulous(I considerd getting seconds on the salad but didn’t wan’t to chance ruining my appetite for the entrée). The staff was incredible. I felt like we were all old friends by the time we left. The ONLY negative comment I have is that our table was right below the air vent so our food cooled a little faster than it should have and by the end of our dinner we were beginning to get a little cold(I don’t know that I would say our food cooling too fast was a real problem though because the food was so good, we never stopped eating). For dessert we had the Sabayon and that was also delicious. I highly recommend eating here.

I went to a event there and found the place a delight. The place is very clean but I found that the soap dispenser where empty in the bathrooms. The salad I had was very fresh and tasted great. I had to get seconds on that. I had Penne Siciliana pasta and I found the pasta was perfect cooked and the sauce was well balanced. I had a few samples of pizza and bread and I could not get enough. This Italian food makes me want to come back and try other dishes they have. The only thing I found odd is that they have a Mexican menu. It only has a few items on it but I will have to try those on a next visit. On the Week end they offer a Breakfast from 7am to none. They have omelettes, pancakes and a few other breakfast items. They have a buy 2 breakfast and get 1 free offer right now. Staff was great. All together I recommend it. JY

Not busy, but we were there at 5pm on a Saturday. They’ve got a bar, wine, beer, but didn’t offer us the drinks menu. I’m new to UT, so maybe this is normal practice here. Next time I’ll be sure to order a Jack & Coke. The food was up to par, my favorite part was that it was bona-fide Italian in a non-generic & franchised setting(not Johnny Carino’s, Olive Garden, etc.)

After reading the great reviews I figured I would have to try this place out since I live close by and still haven’t found a good Italian place in SLC. We got there and it wasn’t busy at all on a Friday night. My girlfriend nad I were seated right away and they took our drink orders. The resturant seemed clean and nice, but paper nakins just seemed out of place. We ordered a pepperoni pizza for an appetizer. I got the steak and she ordered a pasta dish. My steak came with the choice of soup or salad so I went with the salad with house dressing. The server brought us some rolls that were good. No better or worse then rolls anywhere else. A hint of rosemary was a nice touch. The pizza came out. It was ok but not great. Tons of cheese and nothing to make it special. Our food finally arrived. The steak was cooked how I like it and served with a side of mash potatoes and brocolli/carrots. It was all covered in tons of butter. It was basically swimming in it. First 4 – 5 bites of steak was nothing but fat. Once I found some meat it had good flavor but out of the 11oz I would estimate 3−4oz of it was edible meat. The rest was fat/bone. My girlfriends pasta was about room temperature, and had no flavor. She took about 2 bites and couldn’t eat the rest. About ½ way through trying to get through my steak I realized I never got my salad. Another thing to be disappointed about. Once they came by to check I mentioned that and they brought me a salad but having a salad after eating my meal isn’t exactly what I wanted. The salad wasn’t any good anyways. The only reason it is getting 2 stars and not 1 is because the rolls were decent and the steak/pizza was ok. They packed up our leftovers and 2 minutes later when we got home they went directly into the trash can because we knew we would not eat them.

So I was on a search for some good Italian food this weekend that didn’t include the giant chains like Olive Garden. While in West Jordan we found this wonderful little Italian restaurant in that old movie theatre complex, tucked, unfortunately, behind Wingers. There were a few people there, but for the most part we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Let me detail for you why I am now a huge fan of Maurlio’s: 1. The food is fabulous! I know authentic Italian when I see/eat it, and this was certainly authentic. I had this pasta dish… coronata? Yikes I have no idea what it’s called but it starts with a C and it’s delicious. The complimentary bread was very tasty, as well as the side Ceasar salad I ordered. But man, that main course was good. I really wish I could remember what it’s called. 2. The service was probably the most friendly and genuine I’ve ever come across. Our waitress was right there with our drinks and food and she made valuable suggestions(not just suggesting the special of the day like in most places). She chatted and joked with us and suggested probably the most delicious dessert I think I’ve ever had at an Italian restaurant. I forgot the name of that too. I’m useless. Well it’s ice cream with strawberries and a custard of some sort. Starts with an S. 3. The building was pretty cool and the music was all authentic Italian. You can’t learn how to say«Yum, good food» and«Put it on my tab» in Italian in the bathroom like at Macaroni Grill, but you can listen to modern Italian pop music while you eat. Win win. 4. I’m pretty sure the place is family-owned. We had two servers, one of whom was Italian. There were some little Italian kids hanging out at one of the tables, and the cook was Italian. They all look related, but I could be wrong. Just an observation. The prices were also definitely reasonable! Not even close to as expensive as Olive Garden and all of those. It’s just good Italian food, nothing fancy. So PLEASE go there! It was almost empty on Saturday night because the stupid Winger’s blocks the entire building from view. If we didn’t already know it was there(someone told us), we wouldn’t have found it. The location is horrible for a restaurant with actual class. Guaranteed it would be successful in Sugarhouse. Hah, I’m now feeling responsible for the success of the restaurant… It’s one of my new favorites and I don’t care who knows it!
