I went in there to get my watch battery replaced. The owner was extremely nice and changed the battery while I waited. He only charged $ 13 to replace the battery, which is significantly cheaper than the other stores that wanted to charge me $ 20. While he changed the battery, I looked around and he had a decent selection of jewelry; ranging from rings and necklaces to watches. It is a smaller store so his selection is less than other jewelers I’ve been to but he did have some good merchandise. If you’re looking for basic jewelry items, give him a shot. If you’re looking for high-end Rolex or Omega watches, go elsewhere as he only had a couple Rolex watches in stock. However, for a store catering to a college town, it’s a good place with good customer service.

I needed to get my wedding ring re-sized. I called around to a few places and Clayton actually offered the lowest price. I came in and the jeweler was very patient with me as I went back and forth between the size I thought would be best. When I came to pick up the ring, he had made it the size I requested, but I changed mind and asked for it to be a size smaller. He adjusted it again for no charge and now I have a ring that really fits well. I’m not all that comfortable with jewelry or jewelry stores in general, but I had a great experience at Clayton.

Hospitality is the cordial and generous reception of or disposition toward guests. Clayton Jewelers is far from hospitable and clearly not a product of Purdue’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Clearly, the owner could learn a thing or two. Clayton Jewelers is located in the Chauncy Mall, which makes it convenient for Purdue faculty and students to visit. After my experience today, I am convinced the only reason he remains open is a product of proximity to several campus bars. I am in the process of shopping for a wedding band, my fiancé already has her band, but I didn’t like any of the rings at the place she got hers. I happened to be down on Chauncy hill today so I stopped in to get sized and check out the rings. Upon entering the establishment, it was completely empty, no customers or employees. After standing around for a bit, the owner walks out of the back room. I have never worn a ring before so I had no idea what size I am. When I asked him to size me, he flat out refused unless I would buy one of his rings. From what I have read online, it is common practice for jewelers to size anyone. Sizing is suppose to be free. Plus it is a business opportunity to get a possibly uninterested party to look at some of your products. Maybe the customer who needs to be sized also wants to buy an anniversary necklace or something? Maybe you can use your charm to get them to look at your products? Upon hearing that he wouldn’t size me, I was immediately turned off as a customer. His tone was extremely rude and unpleasant. I will not be returning to Clayton Jewelers.

My wife and I were eating at the Five Guys burger joint next door(a great place to get great burgers), and on our way out stopped into this tiny jewelery store because we were in the market for a new wedding band for my wife. We walked in, and the gentleman behind the counter asked us what we were looking for. My wife asked him if he could size her finger. The next words out of his mouth were«Are you planning on purchasing your ring here?» Out response was non-committal, as we weren’t buying a ring that day and not actually sure if we would be buying one in the near future due to lack of funds. His response was surprising — «I’ll only size your finger if you’re planning on buying your ring here.» I suppose this guy had never heard of the statistic that people that experience bad customer service tend to tell many more people than if they have a good experience. No one else was in his shop at that moment, and sizing a finger is a simple and quick operation. A pleasant experience very well could have convinced us to buy a ring from his store at some point in the future. However, he did a very good job convincing us that we will never buy anything from him, ever.
