‘Yes We Can’ Community Center

I visited this community center after seeing pictures on the website of the Town of North Hempstead, (the municipality responsible for commissioning and managing this facility). It is a very new and modern center, complete with solar panels in the parking lot. Upon entering, I was impressed with how large and pristine the center was. I asked the staff about rates and fees for membership and was informed that it was 21 dollars for a 1 month membership renewable monthly.
This rate is given to residents of the Town of North Hempstead. I found the staff very courteous and willing to assist, I asked them questions about the facilities including if they have any fitness classes or computers for public use. A woman, who appeared to be a manager, informed me that they are conducting a survey to determine when to hold certain fitness classes like yoga and zumba. I filled out this survey stating my interest in yoga. At this point, I asked to use one of the public computers. I was given a key board and mouse from the front desk and shown to a room with about 15 computers in a row. When I attempted to use a computer in this room, I found that the three terminals I tried would not work. The friendly and accommodating staff allowed me to use a computer in one of the «tutoring rooms» which I assume normally require a reservation to use. I was able to successfully use this computer.
After using this computer, I went downstairs to where the workout equipment is. Although I was impressed with the number of pieces of modern fitness and cardio equipment, I was disappointed to learn that there were no free weights. In the locker room and on the gym floor, I noticed that it lacked certain amenities that I normally find in private gyms such as cloth towels and soap in the shower.
I give the «Yes We Can» Community Center 4 stars because, for a public community center with a very affordable monthly fee it has a lot to offer.
Pros: Friendly staff, Affordable prices, Plenty of parking, No crowding, Modern equipment, Will soon have fitness classes
Cons: Lacks some of the amenities of pricey private gyms, No free weights (I would give this center 5 stars if they had free weights)

A community center located in the town of Westbury, Long island NY. The center is named in honor of President Obama’s campaign slogan «Yes We Can».
The community center serves educational, recreational and the exercising needs of the community as well as neighboring communities and is able to be used for a nominal fee for those of the community and a slightly higher fee for those who don’t live within it. The staff is very helpful and courteous in helping you meet your need in doing whatever it is you’d like to accomplish during your visit. I’ll continue to support the center and encourage those who live within the community of westbury or neighboring town to stop by for a tour of the facility and support.
