Pros: Plenty of parking space. Food arrived in a short time after ordering. Cons: 1.5 star customer service. The food was not terribly bad, but not good either. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

South of the Border is the BEST Mexican restaurant in Williamsburg. I always get the same burrito entrée and here, both rice and beans are included which offers more bang for your buck compared to the other local places. In addition to the salsa they give you for tortilla chips, they give you bean and cheese dip for free. Their alcohol is also priced very reasonably.

Great family atmosphere, simple but tasty food, ice cold dos Equis on tap, and a great outdoor deck for summer dining! Excellent place. Love the chicken tortilla soup!

Came for lunch with my uncle on Labor Day after running some errands in Colonial Williamsburg. The interior’s nicely decorated, the lady at the front who was also our server was nice. The food came out quickly. The chips and salsa they give out are okay, though I thought the salsa would have more flavor. It just tasted like watery tomato soup to me. Should have been a good indicator as to the rest of the food. My uncle had the fajitas and I had the Chile Relleno. My chile dish had a LOT of cheese on it. The pepper itself had some sort of batter on the bottom, a lot of cheese on top, then a sauce, though all I could taste was the cheese. The rice, refried beans and lettuce were okay. nothing special. My uncle noted that his steak fajitas were a bit chewy, might’ve been overcooked. The only good thing on the table were the green and red habanero sauces. not good nor bad, just meh. mediocre is all

We have been eating here both in and take out since it opened. This is a family owned and operated restaurant. The Owner as well as all staff have been just great to my family and me. I find this a very nice family orientated place to dine and the Mexican food in my opinion is the best. The staff maintains the area in excellent order. Last, but not least the menu has a lot to offe and service is surpurb. Joe and Carolyn

Stop in late for drinks and food. Was great food and great service. They close at 9:00pm but stayed open for us to finish our drinks till 9:30. Was an awesome time would recommend to everyone and would definitely go back.

Great experience! Sat outside in the sun on a Friday afternoon with a couple of Margaritas on the rocks. Service was excellent and food was fast and tasty. There weren’t many people here at the time which probably led to the great service. Overall, fantastic!

Picked this place because of location and an outside seating area. Yay! Great strawberry margarita. Very good salsa.(To me the most important factor.) Fast service and good food. I ordered the Chile Relleno and a cheese enchiladas. Very pleased with both. Nice prices too.

Very good Mexican food. The chili rellano is one of the best in Williamsburg. Waitress was attentive and polite. Great place for lunch or dinner.

First, let’s get one thing straight – Mexicans(and Guatemalans) do work and cook at this restaurant. The menu indeed has Mexican(or more accurately, Mexican-American) food. However, despite 1) Mexicans cooking 2) Mexican food being on the menu, this place really isn’t anything to brag about. Every time(4 or 5x’s) I’ve ordered the horchata here it has come out incredibly chalky and with far too much sugar. I’ll still take below-par horchata over a coke, but just know that it’s below-par. Coworkers that I’ve gone with always emphasize that the bean-queso dip is great to «fill up» on before your meal. But I feel that if you’re «filling up» on anything before your actual meal, well… then it’s not really putting the bar too high now, is it? I’ve tried a variety of their lunch menu specials and they’re all about the same in quality and quantity – 2 star worthy. Ultimately, South of the Border is a great place for college students with not a lot of cash. But if you’re looking to eat some GOOD Mexican food, look somewhere else.

Amazing food. Fajita was nice and colorful. The reason why I gave it only 4 stars is because of the service. My waitress never came to check on us. I needed things and she was nowhere to be found for a long period of time. It was like everytime I tried to get someone’s attention nothing was working. I definitely will still go back plenty of times, I just hope to not have the same waitress.

The ambience and food were pretty good. Probably the freshest tasting mex restaurant in Wmbg. However my thoughts are always the same, no habanero hot sauce means youre really not an authentic place. Anyone can make mex food.

Not good. Went on a Sunday afternoon at 2pm, only a handful of customers there, more employees than customers it seemed. Service was slow and half-hearted, like we were bothering them by being there. Chips weren’t refilled, neither were the drinks. Food was mediocre, guacamole was plain, overall the food lacked taste and seemed, like the service, to be a half-hearted attempt. I am not a picky eater and this is my first Unilocal review — yeah, bad enough to finally write about it. I wouldn’t recommend it!

It’s hard to find authentic Mexican food around here-especially in this area of Virginia. I’m ½ Mexican and have been to to TX, CA, and Mexico where its so good and more authentic(obviously). I don’t care for Plaza because its so bland and tastes very out of the can and warmed it up in the microwave. This place is close to work and I pass it all the time. I finally decided to go with some co-workers and I liked it very much. I like the bean queso dip that they have(salsa comes too if you are a salsa person). I’ve been there a fews times and I’ve ordered the mixed fajitas twice and the some carne tacos-all were very flavorful and the portion size was great(especially for the price). The mixed drinks here are awesome as well cheap too. I will return and I definitly recommend this place.

My kids and I went on another road trip and checked on Unilocal to see where we should eat. Ended up choosing this place, I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. We walked in and greeted and then sat down by a not so friendly worker. Given chips and salsa with refried beans and cheese and our menus. Our waitress was a older woman took our order. She was some what helpful when I asked what types of pork they had and said they do have carnitas but it’s not on the menu. My daughter had fajitas and my son ordered the kids quesadilla. Our food was delicious and on point hot. But our waitress never came back after taking our order but to drop off the bill. We were never asked if we needed anything else nor if we wanted desert nor were our drinks ever refilled. The bathrooms are very smelly and I felt they needed a good cleaning.

On a road trip with 2 friends, we were looking for some dinner before going back to our resort and we passed by this place. Great choice! We were served immediately and the home made chips and salsa were definitely a great start. I had an amazing margarita and burrito with shrimps, combination that I totally recommend! The bill was way lower than what we expected. You’d better try it!

We came for lunch this week and were seated right away. The fresh salsa and bean dip were both very good. I ordered Enchiladas Verdes and it was okay. There wasn’t a great deal of chicken in the enchiladas and the verde sauce was okay. My sister got a taco salad altered for her wheat allergy and they accommodated her needs. I would like to go back and see what other dishes taste like as their chips and salsa was very good. And not having good salsa does turn me off to a place right away.

We were in at Colonial Williamsburg recently and spent the day helping to save the revolution via RevQuest. After eluding those sympathetic to the British all day, we were of course quite hungry. So, we went to Unilocal and found South of the Border as a very close option for Mexican food with decent reviews. So, off we went. We walked in and no one was there. Maybe two tables were occupied on this Sunday afternoon. So, we had a seat and were brought chips, salsa, and a beans/queso mix. They were all OK. My wife had mixed fajitas, which were pretty good actually. Plenty of tasty chicken, beef, and veggies. I had carnitas tacos, which came out on soft corn tortillas but also covered in pico de gallo. In hindsight, I should have ordered them sans the pico because it overwhelmed the carnitas a bit. So, my meal was only OK but that was partly my fault for not ordering the tacos exactly as I wanted them. So, this probably should have been a three star review as the food was actually not bad. But, the service was. When our food came out, it was just kind of «thrown» in front of us. Obviously, it wasn’t literally thrown but it wasn’t delivered with care, either! I can’t quite explain it in words but we all noticed it. Our server was not quite what I would consider rude but definitely wasn’t pleasant either. And given that we were one of only a couple of tables at the time, the attention she paid to us could have been better. So, the service itself knocks the place down a star. So, overall, we won’t come back while in Williamsburg again saving the revolutionary city. It’s hard work and needs to be rewarded with a good meal afterward. And, unfortunately, this place didn’t deliver it for us on this particular day.
