Tucked away in the far northeastern part of Ypsilanti Township, is a family tradition that goes back at least 40+ years. In an age when the large grocery chains import food from around the globe, a local market is all about homegrown Michigan goodness. I have always purchased farm fresh produce from Coleman’s Farm Market, and have never been disappointed with their selection or quality. Coleman’s is my go to place for I fresh fruits and vegetables. Every year, I always purchase sweet Bing Cherries grown up by Traverse City from this place, as they offer the best prices around on these and Rainier(Yamagata) Cherries. If you love fresh, locally produced honey from Southeastern Lower Michigan, this place has it. I always buy a jar or two every year, and enjoy it on my biscuits in the morning. It’s hard to believe that in some cases the honey is produced on a farm just two miles away from where I live at in Canton. After the growing season is over in the fall, Coleman’s has great deals on pumpkins, squash, and Christmas trees. So if you like farm freshness in your diet, Coleman’s Farm Market is the place to visit.

Forget high priced yuppie grocery stores in Ann Arbor! Drive on down to Coleman’s Farm Market in Ypsilanti You can buy local produce grown by local farmers. I have had wonderful conversations with older women and men that grew up down south eating and canning vegetables from their own gardens. What to know how to cook greens? Make a pot of runner beans? Just ask. At Coleman’s you can buy sorghum molasses, local honey, rhubarb, jams and jellies, and little know varieties of squashes and grapes and other fruits and vegetables that aren’t really around, probably because they don’t ship well or just are not mass produced profitably. Hey guess what you’ll see the same people all season long working and everyone has time to talk and be friendly just like in the old days before big supermarkets and self checkout lanes! Its been there for at least 20 years that I know of. It is owned by the Coleman family a local farming family.. It’s behind Los Amigos on Ridge Road just off Michigan Ave. Open till end of October.

Decided to make a side trip on my way home yesterday. The Coleman’s I visited was a small road side stand. They had lemons, limes, bananas, a variety of peppers, tomatoes, plums, peaches, cherries, and blueberries(in addition to a minimal amount of produce I can’t recall). I didn’t see anyting that struck my fancy when I walked around the store, until I got to the section that sold relish’s, jams, jellies, and salsas. I ended up buying a jar of medium salsa. While it wasn’t made by the store(I’m not sure where it as made, but it said made for Coleman’s), it was fresher than a grocery store and very tasty. When I went to cash out, I asked the cashier if they had any other locations, because I thought I had read they had another location. He pretty gruffly told me «they are not the same owners». Overall, I thought was ok. Not great. I am looking forward to trying the other location.

Been going to Coleman’s for years. Their garden plant selection is real good and always well watered and in great shape. Fresh vegetables are fresh and reasonably priced. Probably because its a local family bussiness that grows most of what they sell. Overall a good local bussiness.

The Coleman family has been a major local name in produce for many years. There are Coleman Produce«shops» on East and West side Ypsilanit(both near and on Michigan Ave), the Farmer’s Market in Ann Arbor and the Farmer’s Market in Detroit. I’ve patronized all but the one in Detroit. The RIdge Road Market I visit regularly every spring, Summer, & Fall and have done so for many years. It remains a family business. The Market has such a presence that there are several rumors passed around Ypsilanti Township about the family. The most comic is that this branch of the Coleman family only lives here in good weather. Their real home is in Florida. Not true. This Ridge Road Coleman’s market has a long, well earned reputation for quality produce at a competitive price. The past 12 years or so supermarket produce has rocketed in price and fallen in quality. How many of us have paid regular price for Kroger celery just to find so many of the stalks cracked and filthy that we had to cut away and toss 25% of it? How often does it taste like soap? How often is the Broccoli near flowering or carrots twisted and too thin to bother peeling? Kroger is just the worst. Meijer has its share of below par produce at near meat prices. Mushy bag apples, peaches with bad spots, tasteless and dehydrating oranges & grapefruit, woody red radishes & bitter beets. I am not talking here about the clearance or specials tables. Well, at Coleman’s we get fresh, un-specially colored packaged produce. You see what you buy, no carrots through a reddish plastic bag or celery through plastic so decorated you cannot see what you get. It’s because of the consistent quality and competitive pricing Coleman’s has a large loyal customer base. You also do not see different employees each visit as you often do with supermarket chain stores. In fact, I’ve seen the same produce handlers here for years and I’ve seen the Coleman children grow up and later return each summer during college summer breaks. I hope at least one of them refrains from the lure of becoming a college-degreed mediocare corporate or government pencil pusher and steps up instead to the hard but rewarding work of taking over the Market someday. Ypsilanti lost a real gem when Metro Pro hardware passed on to a son who wasn’t up to the role of carrying on his father’s legacy. Mr. & Mrs Coleman are hard working owners and they invest long hours at the Market, which sells farm-style canned jams, jellies, local produced honey and bags of local grown dried beans. It’s back breaking work but there is rewarding community that comes with it! They are widely appreciated and respected. Regulars know that Coleman’s garden plants are high quality, especially the vegetable plants. Our entire family buys most of our garden plants each year from Coleman’s. They are much better than you find at Meijer, Walmart, or Kmart garden centers and the selection is wider. Unlike most garden center cashiers, the employees can answer queries about the plants. They are also more reasonably priced that what you find at the local Green Houses, Pinters, Rowes, & the pricy entertainment oriented giant Wiards. The family and emplyees are efficient, curteous & happy to assist customers inside the market and outside if they need help loading their automobile.
