The Ashvale is said to serve the finest fish and chips in the United Kingdom. But if this were fact, it seems like a truly fortunate oddity to me because the UK is more or less known as the epicenter of this all-too-often-screwed-up cuisine. Usually, the meal is greasy, and over-breaded and either over or undercooked. At The Ashvale, it was none of this — even the fries were not even slightly oily — I wonder how they do that? If The Ashvale is THE best in the UK, then it must by default be the in the world and by extrapolation therefrom, be the best fish and chips in the known universe. At least, the half dozen or so Scots and Brits I was with said they’d never had better. I tried the haddock, fries and mushy peas. This meal is not complete without the mushy peas for a variety of reasons, but mostly because I just like the sound of it: mushy peas mushy peas mushy peas… Quick lesson #1: The United Kingdom is Scotland(always first), England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Quick lesson #2: 82 °F is 28C and 61 °F is 16C

Never understood why this place is considered to be that good. The people that are running the place are not polite, and the food is just OK. The fish is dipped and fried in too much oil; taking all the fish flavour away, and the chips are chunky bits that are cooked outside and are totally raw on inside…

The huge writing on the storefront claiming to be the #1 Fish & Chips in Britain is TRUE! I’ve never been to a restaurant where everyone that walked through the door ordered one thing — the famous fish and chips. It was by far the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. It has the lightest, crisp batter that wasn’t greasy around a big, fresh fillet of haddock. We have some really, really good fish and chips in Portree and Mallaig but The Ashvale in Aberdeen takes the cake. Must go if you are visiting Scotland.
