I’ve had both good and bad experiences with these guys. They will try to over charge you wherever possible, just politely decline any«cosmetic» help as this is way over priced. The staff seem reasonable enough although getting seen to takes a while… and like the other reviewer i found that they wouldn’t give enough information about when my bike would be ready to ride again. Also my brother took his bike in and ended up being charged double what he was expecting to pay. My advice is: get a quote first! I would suggest looking around for your bike repairs before choosing. This wouldn’t be the top of my list however as there are cheaper, friendlier alternatives.

Behind Bars is one of the worst services I’ve had the misfortune to pay for in almost 20 years of cycling. I took an old style, internally geared Pashley here for an inner tube replacement after I got a puncture. Throughout, I found their service to be ill-informed, shoddy and occasionally hostile. Firstly, they tried to sell me a tyre that I didn’t need simply on the basis of some cosmetic cracks. As the site of the late, great, Sheldon Brown will tell you, tyres do not have to be replaced for this reason and will go for several thousand kilometres before needing replacement. The tyres in my case were among the toughest on the market, Schwalbe Marathon Pluses with less than a thousand km on them. Then they replaced the inner tube. All seemed fine at first, until the wheel in question started working itself loose. I took it back to Behind Bars. Rather than apologise and immediately pledge to rectify the issue, instead they chose to insult my bike, saying Pashleys are a «nightmare» to work with. Frankly, that’s not my problem. They either they take my money and deliver the service or they don’t. Either way, and as I’m paying over the odds for a puncture repair on an internally-geared bike, they could at least be polite. Their ‘solution’ to the problem? Violently twisting the skirt-guards on the rear wheel until the scraping stopped. Inside, I was screaming that this wouldn’t be a permanent fix, as the issue was clearly the wheel, not the skirt-guards, but I foolishly opted to trust their ‘experience’ instead. Lo and behold, 30 miles from Abingdon a couple of days later, the wheel smeared into the frame, making it unrideable. Never again. Pedal Power(Abingdon’s other bike shop) has its faults, but at least they’re nice to work with. Go there for your bike needs, and avoid Behind Bars.
