Its a lump of brass. Im sure the council could have spent the money on something better.

Rating des Ortes: 5 Aldershot, United Kingdom
Probably the most famous thing in Aldershot. I wont go into the history as the previous reviewer has made a marvellous job of that. But local folk law say there is a bottle of Guinness & a packet of sandwiches sealed up inside, left by a forgetful workman when the statue was moved from London to Aldershot!

The Wellington Statue in Aldershot is a monument to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington victor at the Battle of Waterloo and later Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. It was the largest equestrian statue in Britain when it was unveiled at its original location at Hyde Park Corner in 1846. Designed by Matthew Wyatt, this statue of the Duke of Wellington mounted on Copenhagen originally sat on top of London’s Marble Arch. Removed in 1883 when the Arch was repositioned, the then Prince of Wales suggested it be taken to Aldershot ‘where it will be highly valued by the army.‘ Made from 40 tons of, mostly, cannon bronze captured at the Battle of Waterloo, the statue is nearly 30 feet high and 26 feet long. The journey to Aldershot took 16 horses four days during August 1884. Plenty of places to walk around in the area with plenty of parks for the children to play. Stand on top of the hill for great views over Aldershot.
