Quintessential England in lovely Ascot. Delicious fresh cod with so much flavor. The Eaton Mess was the most delicious dessert as well. Great feel, food and atmosphere.

This seriously old English pub(400 years) on a street called Cheapside Road in a town called Ascot, doesn’t really get more British than this… but don’t let the low ceilings and older men standing around the bar fool you. The food here is not your usual pub grub of pies, roasts, or fried good, but nicely plated meals cooked with actual culinary action — which seems to be the theme these days with most of the British pubs in the middle of nowhere UK. We were there with a ginormous group of around 25 people so we were not given their a la carte menu(you can find their menu online pretty easily). We selected from their Party menu, which still came with plenty of choices. I had started with a fanstic appetizer — smoked salmon & cod fishcake, mixed leaf salad & tartare sauce. The weird thing about was that the salmon wrapped the fishcake. It was so good that i couldn’t wait for my main course… but the rest of the meal was disappointing. In going with the theme of eating seafood in an English pub nowhere near the sea(although i suppose one can argue that all of uk is near the sea), I got the pan fried fillet of Seabass, medley of leeks, peas, onions & herbs with sautéed new potatoes & lemon butter. The fish was overcooked and dry, and there was an insufficient mount of lemon butter to make it more palatable. I did not finish it. For dessert, I went with the cheesecake. Also dry and unmemorable. I was disappointed with the food. I have a feeling this has a bit to do with the fact that we had such a large group of people the quality wasn’t there — but I think that the party menu might have an issue as well. It also didn’t help that I walked in knowing that Iw as going to get a nicely cooked meal and not pub grub so my expectations are probably higher than other reviewers. But even in the realm of real food in English pubs, located in small old towns, the Fox & Hounds in Steeple Bumpstead totally beats this place by miles. I wouldn’t make a trip out there just for the food, but if you’re in the neighbourhood, i think it’s a good option.

We spent two weeks in Britain and this place was the best. Historic, unpretentious, quaint, excellent food and service. All the qualities North Americans travel to Britain for.

Great little hidden gem! Food is good but watch your head on the low beams. This restaurant is well worth the search. Recommended by a local and I’m glad I listened! Enjoyed a good meal in this quaint English restaurant. Scallops and a steak did it for me! Great bottle of wine. Pretty much a perfect night! Take the time to find this wonderful restaurant on Cheapside Road in Ascot!

Thought we’d visit here today for a quick lunch. Was offered two menu’s, 1st was a set menu for a full Sunday Lunch, second was the bar menu which looked fine until we were about to order. We then discovered that they had only a third of the dishes listed, and that they didn’t offer children’s portions. Ended up leaving and going to an alternative pub.

Good character, good service and decent food. Went there on a Sunday so it was a set menu. Lovely warm homemade bread before starters, for main course lamb shoulder which was HUGE(even a fat american would have been happy), and I had the pan fried sea bass which was very good. No dessert because we were full by that stage but the people next to us had sticky toffee pudding which looked great. In summary it’s a warm, cozy, historic pub with decent food. Good for an informal meal with friends or family.

This is a lovely pub/restaurant. It is very oldy/worldy and if you are tall. beware! The low beams are everywhere — but luckily they have been padded to stop those heads hurting! The bar area is very nice, very welcoming with open fires and real ales — not a huge selection but afew! The restaurant flows on from the bar area and it is alot larger than you think — there are 3 sections and good for small parties. When we were there, there was a aprty of about 15 on one table. The food and service is excellent — everything presented very well and the waitresses work very hard — considering there was only two of them! It is so nice to see a busy pub in the week — the car park was completely full! We will be back!

This pub is great. It is a 400 year old tavern, has beams and real fires and a small cosy bar. Has a small restaurant area, it gets booked up so best to call in advance. It is not as cheap as some pubs in the area for food but the standard is uch much higher. Lovely atmospheric place to take friends or even suitable for business melas as the quality is so good. Great modern british food, super service. This place has real charm. Good fresh ingrediants, have had gorgeus meat and fish dishes here. Presentation of food is perfect. Desserts are scrummy. Going here is a real treat.

Thatched Tavern is both a fantastic pub and restaurant. You can relax to have a drink in the pub section. Plus you can be seated in the restaurant area. I have had numerous evening business meals. From 4 people to 10. The service is always top notch. For those with friends or relatives that require gluten free — the Thatched Tavern team have always helped me with that requirement. So this is especially good for individuals with Coeliac disease. Check it out! Try the lamb. One of its specialties.
