Our weekend stay here was perfect, the imperial is a large grand looking building overlooking the waterfront, we parked in the rear car park and hence arrived through the back door, but the front entrance is really pretty, the loveliest of reception staff welcomed us, asked how our journey had been. Our room was a small but perfectly formed delight, plenty of money has been wisely invested in all the right places, our bathroom was sleek, modern, spotlessly clean and well stocked with all the goodies you expect to find, our bed was soooo comfy I very nearly missed breakfast, oh yes, breakfast, an experience like no other, none of your congealed beans and rubber eggs here, all the hot food is cooked to order, including the toast. I ordered the smoked haddock with a poached egg on top, but decided I needed to try the West Country sausage(a really meaty treat) and black pudding and hash browns as they are my favourite, the waiter who delivered my breakfast to the table said he had never seen haddock and black pudding on the same plate before. The haddock was so nice, moist and perfectly cooked to compliment the perfect poached egg, the sausage was tasty and meaty and very dense, Keith had a full English and no complaints, our toast and coffee arrived hot and we served ourselves with juice, the dining room was so pretty and I was annoyed with myself for leaving my phone upstairs, the 4 chandeliers would have looked great in a picture for Unilocal review. The hotel has fresh flowers everywhere, the bar area was comfortable and welcoming but again my photo does not do it justice. The staff are all delightful and chatty. I overheard another hotel gust asking a young barman if he liked working at the imperial and he was very happy to sing his employers praises, I think that speaks volumes, happy staff mean they have happy guests, I can’t wait for our return visit, this boutique hotel with is Edwardian grandeur(ok it may be Victorian I’m not sure) is more than worth the price, we got a room on late rooms for £80 adding a couple of drinks at the bar and breakfast took it to £130 so it’s not premier inn prices but it’s not prohibitively expensive and I considered it value for money. The only slight grumble was the corridors look out of place, kind of sad and unloved compared to the rooms and public areas, but they were narrow and that can’t be easily altered and in no way affects your stay. I’d have no hesitation in recommending this place to anyone, and will be going back here myself.

Overall: A decent hotel with relatively decent food served on-site! This Brend Hotel is only a 4 star, but it was enough for us. We were here on a long weekend trip to the South-West and this was our base. We managed to get a great deal, make sure you check online for special rates. They even offered dinner at the hotel for an extra 7.00GBP per person per night(usually 25GBP per person). It was well worth it! Their three-course dinners and coffee were highly acceptable. However, one night I chose the banoffee pie for desserts, which left me having the runs all night(it must have been the cream). They also do a decent breakfast selection. The décor feels like that of an old country club. The staff are friendly and courteous and the only complaint that I have is that the bed is quite small and uncomfortable. I ended up sleeping on the floor… it was far more comfortable than the bed!
