AMAZING! The oldest Free House in England! Beautiful beautiful beautiful décor! Proper old school, small little areas that make you feel its 200years ago! a few fire places to set yourself for the afternoon. Food — great pub food. Classic perfectly done. Had the perfect Sunday roast on Sunday(!) & came back on the Monday, found ourselves a spot by the fire place and stayed a couple of hours sipping on our warm cider !! And super friendly staff!

We have been here 3 times, and Every time the food has been perfect, the beer has been the best it can be and the service… remarkable! Everything from the Prawns and Onion Soup, to the Lamb and Partridge(special) have been prepared to perfection. All of this coupled with the history in this establishment make for a perfect way to spend an evening in England!

As a newbie in Europe, my visit is made more welcome when locals take me to their favorite pub deep in the English countryside. I appreciate these types of visits more because they are usually off the beaten path and instead of tourists, one will find locals frequenting this spot. Due to popularity, it is advised to make reservations in advance for dinner since this pub fills up immediately. Second, because of the close proximity of Pinewood studios, almost after most shoots, this place will be packed. Third, come with your camera, because the building itself is absolutely charming and beautiful. Standing at the bar, imagine my delight at seeing two Springer Spaniels on leads walk right through the restaurant. The conservative and phobic reactions that occur in the US crack me up. I feel that people are dirtier than dogs… and that’s pertains to the viral kind. The menu is pretty extensive and my alcohol-lacking enzyme self was most enthused to hear that they offered ½ pints. Hooray! I went with the delightfully loose and watery Orchard Pig cider and I mean this with absolute endearment. Because it was not strong, it was easily consumed prior to my supper. I washed this down with an appetizer of Melted camembert cheese with garlic and rosemary. When in Rome, I elect to have fare that is local and reflective of the area. I had been dying to try Bubble and Squeak so the minute I found it on the menu, I ordered the plate: The Roasted Pork Belly with red cabbage, bubble & squeak, and Bramley apple sauce. The roasted skin of the pork belly was amazingly crunchy yet caramelized the minute I started to chew. The bubble & squeak was like a croquette but equally savory. My counterpart ordered the Bangers and Mash, which was equally as good. I have noticed that the British sausages are slightly drier than the ones I’ve had in Paris and Prague. Overall, a wonderful prelude to my last evening in the UK. The people, the food, and the overall charm of this establishment has me looking forward to a return visit in the near future.

This building is brilliant, for nothing else go to check it out. So many little nooks and crannies with olden furniture, you could end up sitting on a throne around the ‘knights of the round table’ table :) Or on a church bench converted into a booth corner. The bric a brac dotted around is immense with interesting art work and olden toys all over. Then we come to the immensely long beer list and drinks available — not for the lighthearted. The food is not too expensive for portion sizes and proximity to London. Is of an average standard with amazingly tasty to meh OK. The amount of Lamb was quite astonishing and the parsnip mash was super good. Worth a try. There is a lovely little walk nearby to wonder off the food and look out for red kites.

This. Was. Fantastic. A 900-year-old pub in the English countryside, with an interesting building, good service, and great food. I had the venison stew, a special– chunks of tender meat in a rich gravy, with carrots etc. Can’t remember what my friend had. We had ales on tap, can’t remember those either. This is what I get for not reviewing right away… The overall experience was great. The prices were reasonable for what you get. The décor inside was eclectic and amusing.

Fasten your seatbelts, we’ve gone international. The following blog is broadcast live from London. Follow our journey via the wonders of the internets. Wot-ho old chaps! The Royal Standard is known to be the oldest pub in England and is luckily very near to where we were staying with WordMonkey’s parentals. This pub holds a special place as it was the last supper we had before leaving for Melbourne. And what you want before departing old Blighty is a top meal at a proper pub. On this auspicious night I also had my one and only argument with a quizmaster. Q — What is the name of the NZ Rugby League Team. I chimed in with Kiwis and she only accepted the answer of Auckland. Set me right off. But on this occasion I was fortunate to not only have the parentals again but also my brother and his partner, who had only arrived a few months previously and had not had the chance to break out of London. So what better way to introduce everyone than at an olde pub that can only be found at the end of a windy road in a hidden town on the outskirts of London. As you will see from the photos, we don’t have anything like this in Australia — a 900-year-old coaching inn. Inside there are numerous fires roaring and many different rooms. This pub has a good selection of real ales, which are hand-pumped into your pint glass after being asked if you want a long glass or one with a handle. These ales are the UK equivalent of our craft beers — the only difference is that they are served at room temperature. I was amazed at how quickly I got back into the swing of pints after otherwise drinking half pints at The Taphouse or the usual 360ml bottles. We decided to have just mains as we knew from previous experiences the meals were generous and we would be heading to Heston’s pub that evening. WordMonkey decided on the Grilled Goats Cheese Salad as an entre serve and it was more than enough for someone with a normal appetite. Myself and Father WordMonkey opted for Chicken Leek and Mushroom Midsummer Murder Resurrection Pie. Both a mouthful in description and serving, it is named after the English TV show of the same name that is also filmed very close in the surrounding village. The pie crust was perfectly cooked and the piping-hot filling was well balanced with moist chicken and tasty veggies. I was envious of what my brother ordered(below) but you can’t go past a good pie. Fish Pie with mashed potato topping was what the remaining ladies chose due to the chilly weather. It was great pub stodge — the topping was crisped to perfection and had a good selection of seafood inside. My brother settled on the Roasted Pork Belly and as you can see — they are not stingy on the superb crackling. Keep an eye out for more London Blog Posts in the near future as we will be eating our way around the ‘Best City in the World’ according to Boris Johnson — London Mayor.

I have eaten in this pub for about 25 years, food has always been well above average. The current owners have really done themselves proud. Well keep beers, cider, wines and spirits EXCELLENT food. Great service. Can’t fault it. All gastro pubs should aim to be this good. This is not owned by a chain. HIGHLYRECOMMENDED.

Great pub — very hard to get to, and I am never sure it is well supported by locals sometimes. Lovely little rooms and little places to sit and natters with mates and the Mrs. Good beer normally, and local brews too. Friendly people and food whilst a bit ordinary is normally good and great portion sizes.

Brilliant setting and building. Shame about the photocopied menus whioch really does not match the general atmosphere of the pub. The yoprkshire puddings were sturdy and chewy which was a complete let down. I’d have preferrred more gravy as well, but the meat was cooked nicely and the veg were fantastic. Desserts were all disappointing. Eton mess was VERY sweet, I think sugar had been added to the cream which should have been on the menu as chatilly cream and then I’d have known what to expect! I am pretty sure that we saw much larger portions being given to other tables as well. We were a late sitting, and I got the impression they were running out and the yorkshires had been left to warm — accounting for their super hard texture. The apple crumble was soggy, as was the biscuit base of the cheesecake. I’d recommend you get there early and don’t bother with dessert. I’d definitely go there again, just to give them a chance to redeem themselves :)

Walking around this pub is like going back in time. This is what English pubs ought to or used to look like. Not only a great atmosphere the food is good — they call it grandma’s cooking and it is just that. The rabbit and pheasant are cooked simply and is tasty without fussy presentation. Not a gastro pub but tastes like one. Specialises in local craft beers and they have won awards for both drinks and food. If you love British pubs then this is one to see, if you can find it. cheers.

I was first introduced to the Royal Standard quite a few years ago. Finding it down a winding country lane was quite an adventure — entering this ancient pub via an old barrel just added to its quaintness. Have been back with visitors regularly since. What a shame though that the food has been changed. This was one of the best pubs, not just for the scenery. The food now is quite a disappointment, especially if you’re not much of a meat eater. We chose fish’n’chips and an interesting sounding salad. The batter and chips were too greasy, the salad came without dressing. I am sure I will be back, though, but probably just for a drink and for the atmosphere.

Small in the middle of nowhere pub. Real authentic, all locals only it seemed. They were super friendly to me as an American visiting the UK. Fantastic beer selection on draft. Low ceilings so watch it if you are tall like me. Good sandwhiches and the typical English fare.

Lovely pub in the middle of patch of lovely green and fields. Some history apparently too. We went on a ‘Wet the Baby’s Head’ mission, attempting to drink everyone of the pubs fine ales — [success on that front, much to our liver’s dismay] On special request, they provided enormous jugs for us to get merry. Good food too — only one vegetarian option. One downer, the management were quite rude towards us. Sure we were loud, but we were away from the rest of the clientele, and considering we spunked in excess of £400 between us, you might have expected some warmth!

One of the oldest pubs in England!(Allegedly!) This is a lovely pub in a great setting, it has a lot of history to it and is definitely worth a visit. I think it appears in a lot of guide books as you do seem to get alot of passing tourists! The beer is good, they serve alot of real ales and they also serve alot of ciders which is quite unusual to find. The prices however are slightly higher than other local pubs. We ate here and had good englsh comfort food! Mine was a delight, I had shepherds pie with muttonwhich was very good however my companion had steak & kidney pudding which he renamed gristle pie! Too much suet and not enough meat! But this hasn’t put us off going again!

A lovely pub in a lovely countryside setting. It is situated in the village of Forty Green on the edge of Beaconsfield. It’s quite a famous pub and meant to be one of the oldest pubs in Britain. It is very old and very creaky and dark so do not go expecting it to be bright and modern. It is a great place to go for a gorgeous Sunday roast but it gets very busy. I would recommend reserving a table for peak times like weekends.

Very old pub. Many old rooms, creaky ceiling beams, stone steps up and down: it’s the quintessential country pub. There’s a large list of ales(including some local ones), lagers and wines: and they have a helpful drinks menu that gives full descriptions of everything, beers included. It was mobbed with people today(a Sunday afternoon), and is undoubtedly packed every weekend. It is a large place, though, so if you haven’t made a reservation wait a while, a table will open up somewhere. The Sunday roast was excellent, and featured venison as a choice as well as beef and lamb, and the veg(frequently a sore point for me) was cooked perfectly. It wasn’t cheap, at £12(for lamb and venison), £11(for pork) or £13(for beef), but it was very well done and plentiful. Their vegetarian options are fewer, but tasty. The only thing that rubs me the wrong way is that they go a little over the top on Ye Olde Pub paraphenelia junk cluttering the walls and written into the menu. Check out their website: it’s full of info about their menu, drinks, pub history, walks, pictures, and dog– and kid-friendly policies. Huge car park, lots of outdoor tables, lots of walks.

A lovely little pub that’s been around for centuries apparently. One of the oldest pubs in Britain. They have their own special ale, and you are guaranteed to be sloshed after the 3rd, and probably not get up again. Jolly Rodger it’s called. Place is a little dark though, and could do with a lick of paint inside, but it is also a famous place for filming. Hot Fuzz was filmed in there.
