A quality little gallery plonked between some commercial shops on the Antrim Road that is well worth popping into if you’re looking to buy or simply browse through some local art. The Emer Gallery is also one of Belfast’s longest established Art Galleries having opened in the mid 80’s. This modern showroom on the Antrim Road has been recently refurbished and extended. They carry an impressive selection of works by 20th Century Belfast artists, William Conor, Markey Robinson and Gerard Dillon.

I’m no art aficionado, by any means. But the Emer Gallery is absolutely fabulous for one reason: it provides showcasing space for local artists. We don’t scream enough about the talent we have in North Belfast so anything that gives them a platform to market their work can only be a good thing. The Emer Gallery is so supportive of these artists and gives them a vehicle for their work they would probably struggle to find outside the area.

Emer Gallery on the Antrim Road is a strange place for a Gallery in the first place. Squashed between a medical supplies company and a pharmacist, its bemuses me why they picked this spot. I’ve never bought anything from here, but was tempted in by the life sized iron Irish wolf hound that manages to find itself propped outside on a good day. The space is very minimal, leaving a lot of room for some impressive statures in the centre of the room which also divide the space up making it not look so barren. A very interesting place, if I knew a little bit more about art I might love it!

I am by no means an art expert. Most modern art passes me by(as my friend the expert will attest to… I’m a bit of a heathen), but still — I like this place. I’ve never bought any art from it, but some of the artwork we have around the house was framed there and they did a really good job. They were very professional, and did a great job. In fact, I have more framing needs doing, so I’ll definitely be going to them.
