The Laughter Lounge is a great start for a night out. There were some hilarious acts but I was cringing a little inside at some of the acts crashing and burning in a spectacular fashion. I was also crying a little inside at the £15 I’d just spent. I notice another reviewer said it cost him £20, that is the cost for reserved seating, we are cheapskates, so we decided to go for the unreserved seating, and we still got a decent seat anyway. I must say, it wasn’t all bad, it was a decent atmosphere and we had a good bit of craic among ourselves which set us up for the remainder of our night out. In contrast to this, and as a side note, my cousin went with his friends the following week and said the bouncers were patrolling the place and threatened to eject anyone who was talking when the acts were performing. I did not experience this, but he was quite annoyed about it so I thought it worth adding. They also do various packages for pre show food and nibbles, which we didn’t have, but they looked pretty good.

The laughter lounge has the potential to be something excellent, but for me it really falls short. I love going to comedy gigs, but unless you are going to see an established act at the Waterfront, your only main outlets are the Empire or the Student’s union every few Weeks, so a vibrant comedy club for established acts rather than the open mike nights that are littered around town would be welcome. The range and regularity of acts here is poor. It seems to attract tired old circuit acts, and there is a dearth of fresh talent. My brother got a gift certificate for here from his girlfriend, and though well intentioned as it was, she would have been better off giving him the cash, as he couldn’t use the tickets for 7 months after he received them due to irregular bookings, which when made weren’t great quality. I also have an issue with the price. Tickets are usually £20 which I find very steep.£20 has regularly bought me tickets to top acts like Sean Lock, Stephen K Amos and Ed Byrne to name a few, so to paying that here for far lower quality(yet an admittedly more intimate environment) isn’t cool with me. The ability to get pre show food is a nice touch though. If they could get more quality acts in on a regular basis they could be on to a winner, but they badly need to review their pricing structure!

This is a comedy club-type place in the Odyssey which is supposed to boast local comedians alongside some of the best comedians around the world. Erm anyone got a phone number? I want my money back. There were four people. Not one of them we had heard of but I was waiting for one of those«ooh it’s the fella from the tele, what’s his name…» moments. And I still am waiting. Despite having a funny person or two on the bill, one Australian who was genuinely a great stand-up, there are comedians that you can see in the Waterfront for the same price and will be funnier. From looking on their website of all of their acts, only Stewart Francis(who wasn’t there when we were there) and Sarah Millican(who again wasn’t there when we were) I’ve heard of. I think they need to make this an exclusive place where top comedians come and play every week or every two weeks. Instead, it is a few people who have learned a few jokes that you’ve heard before all supporting(poorly) some person you could might have heard of if you’re lucky. Needs a better and more famous line-up to make me go back. On the plus side, the staff are very nice and you can get a platter of food for £7.50. All they need to do is sort out the comedy and they’ve one of the best venues on Belfast on their hands. At the moment it’s a great idea that hasn’t yet materialised.
