My eyeballs nearly popped right out of my head! Picasso?! Pablo Picasso??! On the Lisburn Road!!! The Lisburn Road in Belfast!!! Strange but true, and his ceramic art’s hanging on the walls of Nicholas Gallery right now. Amazing to see, but it’s not just Picasso. You’ll also find Francis Bacon, Joan Miro, Andy Warhol, Lucian Freud, Bridget Riley, Henry Moore and Frank Auerbach’s art here amongst many other big international names. It’s pretty cool and impressive, even though they are smaller pieces such as drawings and limited edition, original prints. Definitely worth having a look at. I’m glad I wandered into Nicholas Gallery and will be returning frequently to eye up and lust after the art goodies.

Everyone seems to love this place and yes. I am in agreement. It is fantastic to have a gallery which is capable of bringing in the works of some of the worlds greatest artists in history and selling it in sunny south Belfast. This place is very, very small, but the collection it offers are fantastic. There are regular exhibitions of prints and originals from some top class artists, both based domestically and internationally. It really is good to see the city getting the chance to spread its wings in the arts with the Nicolas Gallery leading the way.

To date the best gallery I have seen in Belfast thanks to the shock and excitement of walking in, then thinking… that looks familiar! Yes, Picasso, then Miro, then Bridget Riley. I wasn’t expecting that in Belfast but perhaps it is time to raise expectations, you just never know what you might find next. Turns out there is an exhibition of prints by the above plus other big hitters like Bacon, Freud, Moore, Kossoff and Antoni Tapies. The Nicholas Gallery also shows the newer, successful artists in a tiny space which seems to promise little but delivers a lot.

This gallery doesn’t look like much from the outside, but inside contains a myriad of hidden gems. I love Irish art, both contemporary and traditional works so finding a gallery like this is a thrill to me as I discover new, upcoming artists and see the wonderful art Northern Ireland has to offer. Today I found a ‘MUSTHAVE’ artist ‘Colin Scullion’ whose work I am just in LOVE with! You really should check it out. The lovely gallery owner told me a little about Scullion, I was impressed with his knowledge of the various artists on offer and he chatted away to me about the gallery, picture framing and featured artists. The friendly customer service in this shop has ensured I will remember and return to this delightful gallery time and time again. Hopefully next time I’ll maybe even pick up one of Scullion’s pieces! I can always dream!

One of the few fine art dealers in the city, The Nicolas Gallery is probably one of the best. Going into this gallery on a regular basis, I always found something that would amaze me. Never before would I have thought the work of Pablo Picasso would be available to view and even to buy in our wee city. It is a really great thing to see though. As the city develops itself into a more cosmopolitan city, the art world will have no option but to sit up and take notice. With places like The Nicolas Gallery leading the way, the art community in Belfast will definitely go on improving.
