As soon as you walk into this bakery in the morning, you get a noseful of the fantastic aroma of all the freshly baked goods for breakfast — their scones, pancakes and coconut fingers are particularly delicious. However, my main tip would be: don’t ask them to butter your pancake/scone/coconut finger for you as they use margarine. There is nothing more disappointing than biting in to something and only then discovering they haven’t used proper butter. Come lunchtime, Orr’s bakery put on a sandwich counter which is amazing value. You get so much filling in their lovely freshly baked rolls, and the most expensive is about £2.20 — ten times better and cheaper than the nearby Subway. Their sausage rolls deserve a special mention with their perfectly crumbly pastry and great quality meat which is unusual for sausage rolls. Get in early at lunchtime to make sure you can get one straight from the oven!

This small bakery has plenty of freshly baked goodies including a lot of sweet things like a choice of lemon, chocolate, Madeira and carrot loaf cakes, many traybakes including the chocolate marshmallow ones and fresh scones of various types of the traditional sort — plain, fruit, treacle, cherry etc plus plenty of pancakes and potato bread. I liked the look of their brown and white loaves but didn’t really need them at the time, but tried the wheaten soda bread and scones — delicious. They also do fresh sandwiches and wraps. It’s really a very traditional, local, dependable, old fashioned bakery, not unlike many others dotted around the city, which nonetheless still hold an important place in for food shopping, so long as you have time in the day to make use of them.

Orr’s Home Bakery on the Woodstock Road is my arch enemy. I say that because I’m always temped to go in there and buy something every time I go out shopping. I go out to buy a hammer, and come back with a hammer and a loaf of Orr’s fresh baked bread. They don’t make it any easier on the passers by when they put all the fresh goods on display in the window to tempt everyone walking by. They’ve got breads, cakes, puddings, cookies, biscuits, just about everything your heart could desire in the world of baked goods. I’m a pretty simple guy. I could eat a loaf of bread for dinner. And the first place that I’d get this bread would be Orr’s. I like stopping by at the end of the day to see what they have left over. I’ve even gotten a free cookie!
