I used to hate wee bargain shops like Poundstretcher, I used to think that all the produce was low quality and that they had everything except for things that you actually needed. Now that I have grown up a bit I actually have grown fond of these types of shops and this Poundstretcher out the back of Castlecourt, although slightly run down from the outside, has everything you could possibly need at a low price. For instance i was hosting an event at a nearby bar when we realised we were running dangerously low on paper plates, rather than go to a dedicated party shop we headed straight for Poundstretcher, they did exactly the same plate I had previously purchased form a party shop for a fraction of the price. This is exactly the type of item that Poundstretcher excels at! Staff in this store as helpful as they come and will always engage in a bit of friendly banter at the checkouts. This Poundstretcher is the very definition of A-OK — definitely in need of a facelift but don’t let that put you off.

I haven’t yet Unilocaled fully my opinion of pound shops, so I will start by saying that it is not much. Not much at all. What the vast swathes of people who go through these shops don’t seem to realise is that for a lot of goods, pound shops are the ultimate example of a false economy. One recent example is when I saw in my local Asda pack of biscuits on offer for half price at 60p, the pound shop had them discounted to £1, but advertised this higher price far more extensively. The range of products is of a highly variable quality, and the phrase jack of all trades, master of none, comes to mind. They obviously buy cast offs from other retailers or food manufacturers at low prices. The store is always untidy as people treat the place with little respect as they see a lot of items for«£1 and toss them aside if they don’t want to see them. The staff are depressed looking and unhappy in my experience of buying a multipack of chocolate before a cinema visit, and the staff all had a frown not even Krusty the Klown could turn upside down! Saying I started rhyming there, I shall conclude with another: I am saying to ye, the opinion of me, if it is quality and real value you seek, to a Tesco or Asda any day of the week!

A lot of very cheap stuff if you are feeling the pinch! They sell everything from garden seeds to moisturiser! Friendly but very overworked staff! Can be quite busy at times & the shop is always roasting hot so its hard to stay in here for more than 5 minutes– they dont have air conditioning! Great value & range of household products & they have started selling food!
