Never been here before but hear it was lovely so we give it ago. Have to say I wasn’t really that keen on it. It was ok. I had fish bites which were pretty small and my daughters kids meal was tiny and she didn’t really eat it. The service was nothing special and the portion sizes were sort of poor. So sadly I don’t think I will return.

I was born and raised on the Newtownards Road, or as the Road we called it. I lived in Convention Street in the 50’s and 60’s. My cousins lived in Newcastle street around the corner from the Bethany and it was the place to go for a Friday night dinner. Always a great Craic, and great food. I moved to Canada in the late 60’s and after 47 years I returned to Northern Ireland, now living in Carrickfergus, I’m still an East Belfast lad at heart and any chance I get, it’s over to the Bethany.

I was in the shop today, with three of my friends we went in the floor was Slippy! near the tables, sat down and ordered food but when it came to us It was on three plates in stead of one plate but people around me, wear getting one big plate with their meal bad service! It’s not as good as years ago I think.

The Bethany, the good old Bethany. This old girl has been around for generations and probably will be for generations to come. It’s a veritable East Belfast institution, almost as famous as the ship yard. For years the staff of the Bethany have been feeding the men folk at closing time, and the weemen and children at teatime. It has always been popular and still deserves to be as it churns out really good fish and chips. Waiting in the queue can be a form of entertainment in itself as the staff seem to know and openly make fun of most of the customers. But it’s all light hearted banter, I think. You can sometimes need something to pass the time as the queues can be long at weekends. I think this is a good sign. People queuing = good food worth waiting for. Don’t even think about thinking outside the box, just go for the cod and chips. This is how God(well the God in East Belfast anyway) intended battered cod to be. Huge fillets of cod cosied up in good think batter which is a pleasing golden colour. And the chips are made from real potatoes and fried perfectly. When you say yes to salt and vinegar, you really get salt and vinegar, so perhaps wise to say ‘just a little bit’, no that should be ‘aye, a wee bit love please’. Once you’ve got that lot inside you, you’ll be weighed down for hours so don’t make plans for afterwards, just sit and bloat pleasantly for a while. Does anyone else get a craving for chocolate about half and hour after fish and chips? What’s that about? Perhaps its Mother Nature’s way of saying ‘in for a penny…’

GReat chip shop !! Good quality food, quick service — all you could want. Prices are good value and the food is good. Can be busy at times so be prepared for a wait at busy times but where is any different?

Quite possibly the best fish and chips on the planet. Almost every Friday evening for me growing up was spent getting my fish and chips fix from here. Having now moved away I get to spend less time here but I can confirm the standard has not dropped an inch. Probably some of the best battered cod around today. They offer both sit in and take-away service.
