Not 4⁄5 star. This hotel is in need of a major over haul, everything is very old and tired. It’s in desperate need of decorating everywhere. The rooms need bringing up to a standard that they are selling it as. Bathrooms without proper working showers, mould on walls, very noisy plumbing. Some staff could be given training in customer relations, mainly reception staff. Food isn’t too good either, breakfast cold, with very strange looking scrambled eggs! All in all it could be a lovely hotel but needs someone with the vision and determination to bring it up to that standard. Not worth the nightly rates charged at present.

stayed a few times for business purposes and loved it. beautiful. superslow rececption adds to the charme. only downside: bit far away from civilization, so prepare for a long taxi ride.

This really is a fantastic venue. I stayed at Makeney Hall for my sisters wedding and have to say that it really couldn’t have been better. The building, rooms, food, staff and surrounding countryside views were all excellent. If you are to stay here for a short weekend break, or thinking of holding your wedding here, I would definitely recommend it. It is well located just off the A6 and is found a few miles away from the town of Belper. The hotel itself is located on a hill side and looks across the river valley towards Duffield. On a nice day, it is really nice to sit in the gardens and have a drink, or have a meal in the conservatory restaurant. The food is a little on the pricey side though. It really does live up to its 4 star standards, and would definitely be recommended.
