This is my gym and I love it. I’ve been part of a few gyms now that I’ve lost my teenage metabolism and that slice of cake really does stick to the hips and brings friends with it, and this one is probably my favourite. The facilities it boasts are impressive. Two swimming pools, a full gym, sauna, steam room, café and rooms for spinning classes and yoga, it has everything you could need and even some things you want as a reward for cycling those five miles and doing 50 crunches. The type of people it attracts are varied too. I’ve been part of a few gyms where the focus seems to be on attracting skinny young girls who flick their hair and perch on a bike, eying up the guys in the weightlifting section. That can be off-putting when you’re sweating bucket-loads and your face has gone bright red from exertion. But Crook Log has a mixture of young and old, male and female, thin and not-so-thin and you feel welcome whatever your fitness level. A membership costs around £42 a month and you sign up for a year’s contract, but you only need to go twice a week to make it worthwhile and it includes access to all facilities. It sounds expensive but when you consider that to go swimming, it’ll cost you £5 a time, it suddenly starts to sound more reasonable. They also do swimming-only memberships at £20 a month, so they definitely cater for all. The biggest problem I’ve found with gyms is trying to motivate yourself into going. But this problem disappears with Crook Log. From the range of things you can do there to the warm and welcoming atmosphere, you’ll find yourself leaping out of bed and racing down to jump on that exercise bike. Anything that inspires such activeness first thing in the morning can only be good, right?

Like the other sports centres which were taken over by Parkwood Leisure group, Crook Log Sports Centre has been refurbished to the extent that if you haven’t been there for a few years, you could be mistaken for thinking you had turned up at the wrong place. The centre has been modernised giving it a clinical and clean feel. The gym upstairs has plenty of equipment and the wait for machines to become free is minimal if you have to wait at all. TV screens are on in front of the running machines meaning you can catch up on the days news stories or watch sports events. Weights machines are at the end of the room with a good selection. The pool downstairs is a good place to finish your session and cool off although you may have to share it with people taking part in various pool based sessions such as aerobics or kids clubs. Timetables are available on the website if you wish to have an undisturbed swim. If finishing the session with a swim is not for you then a café and bar makes a good location to sit and let your muscles recover. It is spacious and finding a table is not a problem. For those with kids, a crèche service is on offer meaning you can train with ease. Parking facilities are on offer on site with a large car park outside with plenty of spaces. Price wise, Crook Log and Parkwood Leisure are very reasonable. Membership is £34 a month and this includes use of the gym and swimming pool facilities as well as discounts on court hire and other services at the centre.
