Blue Mango is a good sized Indian restaurant situated by the canal off Broad St. It has tasteful décor and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant can cater for groups. I went with a group of six people on a Wednesday evening after work, and the place was fairly quiet. Service was excellent, with attentive and friendly waiters. The food was delicious! I had the Chicken Curry with rice and a Keema Naan, and the Chicken was soft and tasty. The rest of the group enjoyed their food too. Cost was around £20 for a main, rice and a Naan with a couple of soft drinks. I’d recommend this place for after work dinners, business meetings or groups of friends.

Behind The Solomon Cutler pub on Broad Street is Regency Wharf, which is home to a couple of eateries including Blue Mango Indian restaurant. We were asked to check out their offering, so dragged a few friends along for a pre-Christmas Indian. It’s a fairly large family restaurant broken up by wooden railings and differing levels. Dining on the night we were there were families with children, guys out on the beer, and other random groups of friends. It’s not overly loud like some dining rooms can be, and we were able to have an animated conversation over the generously sized decoratively inlaid table. Obviously we had to have poppadoms while we reviewed the menu, and they included the cone shaped ones that are utterly hot and spicy. The dips alongside them also contained a chilli heated raita with a real kick, and a sour mango chutney. For starters we tried the onion bhaji and the Dosa. You’re no doubt familiar with onion bhaji, and this was a particularly good version of it — spicy and crisp light batter, not at all cloy, with big chunks of mild onion. You may not have had Dosa before, I think it’s best described as looking like a rolled french crêpe. However they’re made from rice flour rather than wheat flour and they’re rolled and stuffed with a spicy sour vegetable or chicken curry — I opted for the vegetable version as I sometimes find Indian food to be very heavy, and that the veggie versions are equally as tasty and lighter. I very much enjoyed it and will definitely be having Dosa again. For mains I had the Kori Gassi, a chicken curry with grated coconut and coriander seeds, — very enjoyable. We tried the chicken Dum Ki Biryani, which was flavoursome although lacked the promised garlic in the accompanying raita and vegetable curry. The curry was very smooth, I think I prefer the more normal version with chunks of vegetables. We also had the Masala Gosht Tak-A-Tak, that’s a dish of lamb served on a bed of onion on a sizzling iron plate. I think this was really the only disappointing dish of the ten we tried, which isn’t bad odds — it was a little bland we thought, certainly compared to the chicken version of the Tak-A-Tak which we also tried. At this point of the evening I managed to tip a spoonful of orangey red food down the 2 inches of white fabric on my top, and then spent 20 minutes in the gent’s trying to rescue it! The service was leisurely but pleasant, perhaps a little slower than we’d usually expect, but it was full of very large groups and we were kept well watered so we had a good time catching up. We washed down our meal with the usual — Cobra beer — but they also often wine, and unusually for an Indian restaurant on this price point, a cocktail list. I’d recommend it for a family or group gathering to be well fed at a reasonable price, it’s probably less than £35 for two people for two courses with sides.

First, the plus points of Blue Mango: it’s attractive and quite large, it looks like they cater well for family parties, they have booths as well as tables and they give you an appetiser of poppadoms for free. The staff are also good, very friendly, attentive and prompt(bearing in mind that we went at 6pm so it was a little early). Unfortunately the reason I’m giving them only two stars is because I wouldn’t consider going again. The food was really not very good. The starters were enormous– I had a chicken haryali tikka, which must have been a whole chicken breast. That wasn’t bad in itself, but I just didn’t like it and it started to make me feel a bit sick. My partner’s salmon tikka was better but equally huge and he felt it was a little undercooked. We only managed a very little of the main. My partner said his chicken tikka masala was unlike any one he’d had before and it was like chicken in tomato soup. My Goan monkfish curry(two chillies) was barely spicy and the fish was very chewy and quite unappetising. I can’t really recommend this restaurant on the basis of the food. The only thing that made it okay was the staff.

Nice environment. Very friendly & accommodating staff helped me determine which menu items were ok for my gluten-free diet. Dosa chicken appetizer was delicious!

I went to Blue Mango for dinner last night. It’s behind the Birmingham Hyatt Regency. FYI: They do not have soft drinks available for take-away. I learned this as I was trying to «take away»…(«take away» = carry out! for the non-English) FYI: Their main dishes do not come with rice. You have to order rice and bread separately and pay additional. Free Appetizer: They give you free pappadeum and yogurt, mint/corinader sauces — which was quite nice. I ordered chicken tikka masala and steamed basmati rice. DISCLAIMER: I am not giving two stars because they did not have soft drinks available for take-away. Or the fact that you had to pay for the side basmati rice!(approx. 4GBP). No, no, no… The only reason I’m giving it two stars is because the chicken tikka masala was not very impressive. I may not have ordered the«right» dish, but I figured chicken tikka masala can never go wrong. It was just okay. I’ve definitely had much much better — for both the quality and value. So, mehhhhh… The ambiance was very nice. No complaints here. Free Appetizer: They give you free pappadeum and yogurt, mint/corinader sauces — which was quite nice. I would go back again, but only on the company’s money. I’m sure their other food has to be better, right? For a restaurant with such a nice ambiance… I hope so.

Nice atmosphere, good location, great food and reasonable prices – this is an all-around good bet for a nice meal. Nothing spectacular, but no drawbacks either. The Peshwari Naan was so tasty I was tempted to order another one for dessert. If only I didn’t live 5000 miles away, I’d be back here again very soon.

don’t let the cheesy name and great city center location fool you. the food is pretty great. i had king prawn tak-a-tak(i think that’s what it was called??), which i’d never seen nor had before. my friend described it as «indian fajitas”– spicy prawns, peppers and onions served sizzling on a hot skillet. it was delicious– so much so that i’m still thinking about it and counting down my next(work) trip to birmingham so i can go back. an added bonus(to the delicious food) was the very friendly and attentive wait staff. yes, i’m a sucker for good service(and in fact, the BEST meal can be ruined by a crappy attitude), and this was a pleasant experience all the way around indeed. if you’re looking for good indian food in birmingham city center, definitely stop at blue mango.

Visited with three colleagues — had the set menu — don’t be fooled by the price — it seems quite expensive but they refill the dishes as many times as you ask. Food was very good. Only adverse comment is that the wood floor and open plan make it too noisy and conversation can be hard.

Indian restaurant just off the main thoroughfare of Broad Street. It’s ok, this place, it just didn’t fill me with the joy that Indian food often does. The beers, in particular, were massively overpriced. I appreciate that the tigers can be big, but why do they come with such a bite? Also, the set menu is tempting but again too much to justify. In the end, I was faced with a Rogan josh of blandly predictable ordinariness and some bhaji of decent but uninspiring origins. A reasonable place for a boozy curry, but don’t come here for a special occasion.

I’ve been a couple of times, and there always seems to be a nice lively atmosphere. More of an Indian Restaurant than curry house, there is a nice contemporary feel to Blue Mango with, and the food is always fantastic. Tucked away in Regency Wharf, you don’t get so many broad street drunks in here than some of the other Indian restaurants close by.

Food: — Absolutely amazing, I would give this 5 out of 5, if you are not keen on a lot of spice etc, they will alter all meals for your taste. Their meals are full of flavour, with plenty of everything e. g meat and sauce. There is just the right amount of choice on the menu. We did not have to await ages for our meals, though they actually ask if you are ready for your next course, we ordered our starters and if you like they will come after that to order your main. We found that there the portion size is more than value for money, e. g 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 naan breads, one rice, bottle of Chianti wine and 2 bottles of water, And of course two deserts all for £35.00.They do special offer 2 for the price of 1 Sunday to Thursday. The staff are always friendly and make you feel at home. I would definitely advise anyone looking for a decent Indian meal to try out this restaurant.
