So shitty food, burger bap was cold and dry, the menu card said gravy with the chicken pie, but there was none, music was to loud for the time off the day.

Its been refurbished and it looks great. New management, friendly staff and another ladies’ loo. Mens upstairs. No disabled though. Lovely photos of Birmingham, pool table, comfy seats, great booze prices, nice flooring, pretty windows, inspirational verse on beams, lighting and tv. All to make you comfy with music to suit everyone

This is a classic example of a typically old English Pub. Although the interior décor looks like it hasn’t ever been treated to a lick of paint and the smell of stale beer wafts through your nose upon entering the building, I don’t think this pub should even try to change. Too many pubs these days are focusing on having a refurb which I feel completely destroys the true characteristics of what a ‘proper’ English pub should represent. Beer, food and somewhere to sit. You don’t need shiny decorations and glass tables to enjoy a quality drink with good old British grub. As this is right near to the market, you’ll often find some of Birmingham’s happiest locals enjoying a beverage and they’re always friendly and up for sharing a tale or two. Something you just cant buy in a new swanky city centre bar.

The Bull Ring Tavern is not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing building in Birmingham but in my opinion that is part of its unique character. It’s right opposite the rag market and as such retains an unmistakable working class air which furthers its individual charms. The inside is not too modern either, but it has a regular footfall of loyal customers so why change a winning recipe. I’m not going to deny that there are classier, better looking pubs in Birmingham but a lot of them have a lack of character, they have a kind of facelessness which lends itself to a complete lack of atmosphere in some cases. That’s certainly not an accusation that can be levelled at the Bull Ring Tavern. So in summary, an old style public house in a central location which has Birmingham quality at its very centre. It’s far from perfect but it’s ours!

MY favourite thing about this place is that it probably annoys the hell out of the urban planners who have built the shiny Selfridges building a few hundred yards away. To them, this place must represent an eyesore and I bet they wish they could bulldoze the entire block that houses it. For that reason alone it should stand forever. The Bull Ring Tavern is in the heart of the Birmingham Markets — where traders and shoppers have been selling fruit, veg, meat and fish for hundreds of years — and this is the pub where a lot of the traders will take a break. The interior clearly hasn’t changed for a good 40 or 50 years and it has an air of the 1970s about it — particularly the wooden-slatted bar area. There is also literally nothing in there beyond tables and chair and a few fruit machines, and nothing much in the way of decoration adorns the walls. As the market traders start their days a lot earlier than the rest of us, it’s not uncommon to see people drinking quite early in the day, and lunchtime for you is late in the day for this place. You can get a pretty quiet pint in here if you want to escape the shiny madness of the BullRing shopping centre for 20 minutes.
