I do confess I have been to this place because its name and I am probably not the only one who did it. Selly Oak high street has these shops with interesting names: Selly Sausage, Café Face and so on… I wonder if it’s a kind of challenger among the independent shop owners to have the most unusual and interesting name. Anyway, I went far and have«googled» possible other Café Faces around the world and guess what? There are quite a lot! The one at Selly Oak is located on Bristol Road and it was quite a good surprise. The menu as well as the name is quite interesting for a simple corner shop. They cater for all public and as it is relatively next to the University of Birmingham, this is a great place for students hang around. It’s a small point as well, so it’s better not to bring all your mates together! The service is spot on and they have a very loyal clientele.

Browsing Selly Oak High Street, I was looking for a place to stop off for a quick snack and picked out Café Face as an unpretentions venue, recieving a reassuring amount of lunchtime trade. Grub on offer is standard Café fare, and the ketchup and brown sauce on each table let you know that Café Face is a safe place for a full english. Deciding on a baguette, the menu showed a wide range of choice, the food was prepared quickly and the salad was fresh. I was offered a seat and stayed to eat my baguette gazing out on the crowds of Selly Oak. Café Face is a safe bet for a full English and also makes a decent baguette, if you’re in Selly Oak and wish for some simple grub in a good old fashioned Café you can’t go wrong with Café Face.

Possibly the most unusual thing about Café Face is the name. Everything else is pretty much how you’d imagine an English Café to be — full English breakfasts big enough to induce a coronary for less than a fiver, bacon and egg sandwiches, cheap cups of tea and coffee, baked potatoes served with baked beans… the menu does stretch to more exotic items such as baguettes featuring odd vegetables like aubergines, but you get the feeling that most of the place’s income comes from the standard stuff. It’s a plainly decorated, small scale operation that always seems to be fairly busy which does give the buisness a homely feel. If it’s fancy accruements such as wi fi, arty wall hangings and stainless steel lightings you are after then you would be much better off looking elsewhere. However, if you’re looking for a simple meal away from the madding student crowds that fill up Selly Oak’s streets during term time then Café Face is probably your best bet as the prices are cheap and the food is perfectly edible. Or if you just really like those red and white checkered plastic table cloths…
