This is one heck of a classy shoe shop. I’ll often pause and gawp through the Colmore Row shop windows with one thought going through my head: «there must be some men with size 5 feet». These are men’s shoes that this lady wants to wear. Actually, they also sell ladies shoes too but that isn’t half as much Annie Hall fun. The shoes aren’t flashy or edgy; rather they are timeless classics like brogues, Oxfords, Derby’s and Chelsea boots. Everything is made from tan, black or oxblood leather and suede. Crockett and Jones also offer bespoke shoe-making services. All of this comes with a heavy price tag attached. The best of British don’t come cheap y’all!

Ooh this is a posh shop — for ages I’d only dared peek in the window but I do know someone with oddly shaped feet who swears by this place so feel I can write about it with a bit of authority. Crockett and Jones(sorry but don’t they sound like a crime fighting duo?) offer both a bespoke and more mainstream range of shoe ware. Although the handmade shoes are rather expensive they are, according to my oddly shaped footed friend totally worth it. The more main stream collection features beautiful looking brogues and low-heeled shoes and boots. As well as that they sell belts, boot polish and from what I gathered from my last peep in to the shop itself(I now know where the phrase ‘well heeled’ comes from — the gents in there looked loaded) a small selection of ladies shoes. Inside the store it’s a nice mixture of wood and comfy chairs and surprisingly light — however I felt a tad self conscious in my hush puppies(scuffed) so made a hasty retreat. A quick visit to their website shows that as well as Birmingham, they have branches in Paris and New York — how many shoe stores do you know that can boast that?

Now as a man’s shop I personally haven’t bought anything from here but as a brogue wearer and lover I often ogle the wares in the window. Now as I wear men’s brogues anyway, often vintage ones from ebay I would totally buy myself some form here, I just don’t have the disposable income to invest, but as someone who buys well made old brogues I know I’d go here for some brand new ones. Why buy some super mass produced brogues from a major high street brand that will fall apart in a few months and require a resole that costs more than you paid for the shoes in the first place? Why indeed when you could spend a bit more and have something made in England from Crockett and Jones? They’e been making shoes since 1879 and hail from Northampton, so just down the motorway really. Buying a pair from here you can guarantee that as long as your shoe size doesn’t change you’ll still be wearing them when you get old, just maybe with a new sole.
