This is a great place for a greasy fry up! Oh yes, this place is amazing and I enjoy coming here at it is not too far from where I live, but it is slightly out of the student area, so I can come here for a bit of peace. I found this place as a friend recommended it to me and said that they do the best greasy breakfasts and so, nursing a hangover one morning, I decided that was just what I needed to sort myself out. It was fairly busy when I first went in as I think that everyone in the area knows just how good it is. I ordered a full English and a large cup of tea, which I had topped up as I soon drank it quickly; it was good and strong too, just how I like it. The breakfast was amazing, tasty and greasy and just full of flavour! It is amazing how a few fried foods can taste so good!

When is a greasy spoon café likely to be a good greasy spoon café? I’d wager that the location of The Golden Coin is pretty much a textbook example. It’s situated on a busy main road(check!), there’s a pub nearby(check!), there is a plumbers merchant and heating supply shop used all-day, every-day by tradesmen(check) and there is an industrial estate yards away(check!) and, finally, the café opens very early and shuts up shop mid-afternoon(check). All of this ought to tell you that if the Golden Coin offered substandard food in stingy portions for high prices, it would have been found out long ago. The opposite is the case. This is a classic British café doing what classic British cafes do best: Hearty food, brilliant tea, and no messing about. If you are in the area(and it’s before 2.30pm) you should grab a fry up here.

When writing reviews for Unilocal I like to try and add a few of the best of each category in quick succession, so here’s another great greasy spoon for the good people of Birmingham to enjoy. Golden Coin Café is located in Cotteridge and it is a beacon of greasy British goodness! First things first they take phone orders so if you’re in a rush you can ring ahead and the good people there will have your food waiting for you on arrival, which is great service in my book. Secondly they do a breakfast of monster proportions which should not be missed out on. It’s called the extra large breakfast and at four pounds ninety five you most definitely get your money’s worth! The extra large breakfast comprises two eggs, bacon and sausages as well as mushrooms, beans, tomatoes, black pudding, two pieces of bread and butter and a cup of tea! If you feel like taking on the challenge then be prepared to not eat for the rest of the day as a combined feeling of utter fullness and satisfaction will wash over you afterwards. Another great purveyor of big Brummie breakfasts!
