Hard to Find records are not really that hard to find, all you have to do is go to the Island bar and walk up the hill over the road. They have gone with the times and sell music and DJ equipment at good prices online. Yet they still have a store open and I like to come in to have a browse at all the music gear and records on sale here. If you are a real DJ and use vinyl then this is the place for you. HTF can literally source a record from anywhere and they have never ever failed me, not to this day. I love all sorts of music, but I like to mix surreal loud electronic music, I don’t know why, it just makes me feel good. They have managed to find me records from local labels such as Downwards to loads of Tresor titles. This is the one of the greatest musical institutions in Birmingham.

The name ‘Hard To Find’ really does sum this place up. I have tried and failed many times to discover it, after reading great things about it. Luckily, I finally realised that my friend knew exactly how to get there. I’m just hoping I can find my own way there next time! Hard To Find is a great shop that’s absolutely devoted to the world of DJing, and every nook and cranny linked to DJing. Except one major thing, they do not stock vinyl in store. When talking to the staff, I found out that they used to stock vinyl, but opted just to selling DJ equipment instead. I think they’re missing out on a very large market here, and I do hope they reintroduce vinyl into the shop at some point. Although they do sell vinyl over Ebay, which is how I got to know about the shop in the first place. I can’t believe I’d never heard of the place before finding it on the Internet, considering it has been going for 21 years! I’ve been missing out big time! I went into Hard To Find specifically to buy my first pair of headphones. I knew that I wanted a spiral chord pair, so told the staff member this. But unfortunately, every pair that he came out with were standard chord. The staff do allow you to try out headphones in store before you buy them, which I think is exactly what you’d hope for.

As an aspiring DJ I paid a visit to Hard To Find Records and I was amazed by the amount of equipment that was available for this pastime. So seeing as knew only a limited amount when it came to finding the right ‘equipment’ for me, I asked for some advice. ‘What’s the simplest but most effective DJ system you have?’ I inquired, which was received with suppressed amusement as I suppose to expect someone who is acquainted with the most esoteric DJ gear knowledge to answer that without a few days of discussion is ridiculous. Well I had no knowledge to enter a optimum Disc Jockey gear debate — anyway I persisted with my naively with my inquiry. I just wanted something that would allow me the simple pleasure of playing music for people to enjoy, whilst being able to include an incompetent, incongruous scratch and other effects now and then if I wished to be so ‘hip’. Finally, I found a product that might just allow me to do the following with the enormous help of the staff who guided me through the dense forest of consoles, decks and software. If you are inclined to play music now and then under the title of a ‘DJ’ then Hard To Find Records is the place for you.
