Having lived in the Jewellery Quarter for a while, I’d somehow missed out on the Hylton Café until we wanted breakfast out on a weekday and discovered all our usual breakfast/brunch haunts were weekend only. Never fear, a quick search and we discovered the Hylton Café right around the corner. Immediately loved the chilled out and friendly atmosphere — I ordered the double decker sarnie(packed full of bacon, sausage, egg and tomato) and my other half had the Emerald breakfast(I like the touch of the breakfast dishes all being named after jewels!), both washed down with an excellent cup of coffee. Next time we’re in need of a ‘proper café’ breakfast, this will no doubt be where we head.

EDIT: since I first reviewed this place I’ve probably been in 20 – 30 times for breakfast/brunch. The 5***** review remains. Consistently excellent place #bestinbrum For years, maybe 25+ or so, I’ve been a supporter of all my various ‘greasy cafes’, wherever I’ve lived or hung my hat! Based on that I think that I know what counts and what doesn’t and, for me at least, Hylton has cracked it. It’s clean, the food is well prepared and offers great value, service is friendly and welcoming without being imposing, and the range of choices available is amazing. They also offer a delivery service which seems very popular and you can ring in orders for later pick up. There’s a steady stream of regulars popping in for this service and many are known to the owner Gary by name — always a good sign of a place well embedded into their community. All in I can’t fault the place or the owners and the fact it’s just 50m from where I live is a bonus on those days I need a quick/tasty fill-up with minimal expense or effort. Highly recommended!

The Jewellery Quarter is a great shopping experience, a really good day, so much to see and do while you’re on the search for bling. There are plenty of places to rest and refuel but this place stands out as one of the best. The food is good, the service is good, the price is good. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch a light snack or a cup tea and a slice of cake, this place is an excellent stop off.

Based in the Jewellery Quarter it’s no surprise that the range of big breakfasts are all named after gemstones, but with a range of all day breakfast items and a hearty lunch menu this greasy spoon is where everyone comes for their sarnies on a Friday so expect a wait on that day. With happy staff, bicycle deliveries around the JQ and chocolate concrete cake like you used to get from school its a great greasy spoon. You’ll definitely feel full after eating here with the best hash browns for your breakfast. They offer both take away options and deliveries from phone orders at no extra cost. Gary is the main boss and is always there to welcome you with a super smiley, chipper greeting. If you’re in the area and in need of a hearty breakfast then give them a try.

Gary and his team of staff are always annoyingly happy and bubbly, regardless of how grumpy and tired the customers are.(It’s only annoying because I’m jealous of their morning prowess!) I can heartily recommend the delicious morning feast of the Emerald breakfast — a vegetarian breakfast-and-a-half, with all the regulars you’d expect plus a big mug of coffee and mountains of thick toast. Cheap and cheerful and YUM. Be warned — Friday morning are chaotic as it’s always their busiest day of the week!
