Full of locals, sometimes a little sticky underfoot, and a bit dark and depressing. That said, they serve some of the best booze in Acocks Green and have a wider variety than that chain pub up the road. The telly is usually on when I go in there and it’s usually showing something which I ignore but the locals seem to enjoy, so I just get on with my conversation and get my fix from the bar. Avoid: if you’re bringing your missus and want to impress her(unless she’s in to this sort of place). Good for: variety, homely atmosphere, and are sick of the noisy ‘spoons up the road and don’t want to pay hotel prices of the Westley Arms.

My first visit here some years ago painted a disruptive picture, one not so enjoyable. I steered clear of here and avoided it when I could. I came here agin recently and felt at ease. They serve numerous drinks on tap, many of them tasting nice. It is fairly big and now they have a seperate part(Route 44) that host different live bands and music. This pub usually gets fairly full. There is outdoor seating here for the summer too.

In years gone by and under other management, this has been quite a ropey ol’ place in many of its other incarnations. Since taking it over 7 years ago Brendon has certainly regenerated the pub and realised the true potential of what is a lovely building. There are ciders and ales available at the bar, and more ales in the cellar. I sup a Butty Bach from Herefordshire, and its well kept and a good drop. The ciders are ones I’ve not seen before: Millwhites press and brew a blackberry cider, which at 6.0% has it’s strength hidden by a Summery sweetness. Hungry families and hungover tums can enjoy a carvery on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. There’s a separate music venue in the shape of Route 44, where live original and covers rock bands play, and where there’s the occasional classic rock disco on to get your metal hair a head-banging to!

A close friend had a wedding reception in the function room at the side of the inn. Drinks were very well priced, staff were very friendly, and the manager Brendon, was a real charmer, they even provided a bouncy castle for the kids(which is at the pub all the time at weekends, to entertain the kids while the grown ups watch footie). Over all a pleasant place to have a drink, no one bothers you, and there is even a pool table for the more athletic types. As for the food? Well… it’s good old fashioned pub grub, and again resonably priced. good atmosphere. see for yourself. ”
