A newsagents, convenience store and off licence rolled into one! This was very handy for me when I used to live and work in Kings Heath. They sell papers, sweets, crisps, soft drinks, groceries, alcohol, scratch cards and have lottery machines. It’s fairly standard for the type of shop it is although bigger than most but what’s great about this place is the friendly staff who always have a smile and a hello for you. They are very helpful and genuinely nice people which makes any shopping experience, no matter how quick, much nicer!

Kings is a prime place to pick up a few drinks serving the social hub that is York Road and the surrounding Kings Heath area. Special offers are frequent affairs and the selection of drinks is good with a subtlely changing supply to keep up with changing tastes. Chaps behind the counter are a good laugh and always seem to be in good sorts. One thing I love about this off license are those special gift bottles of slightly absurd looking beverages that sit high up behind the counter, like a Tequila served in a glass cowboy boot. It’s a mark of the place that such items are on offer, this is the offy not just for the occasional drinker but also caters for those special occasions when something a little novel is required. Whether you’re dining in one of the Yorke road curry houses or just kicking it with friends, Kings is a safe bet to wet your whistle for the evening.

A popular place to pick up tobacco if you are drinking in the nearby Hare and Hounds, or booze if you are eating in one of the many local curry houses, this is a friendly and fairly decent local convenience store /off-license. They also do pet food, which is worth knowing at 10.55pm when you realise that your dogs haven’t had their dinner. The best thing about this place is the manner in which the blokes who run the store chose to deal with some of the many local boozehounds who come in a demand a discount. Rather than sheepishly say that prices are as marked, these boys go on the offencive and argue loudly that £3.99 for 4 cans is a bargain, and that they’re actually doing you a favour. I must admit that this has a certain amount of style and always makes me smile.

This is a handy store for me as my other half works in Kings Heath and I often find myself popping in here to purchase a bottle of wine or some snacks, upon waiting for him to finish work. The lads that run this store are always very chatty and they are always full of jokes and anecdotes about their own lives. They always make me feel quite welcome and once, I embarrassingly had my card rejected, but they were really pleasant about it and let me leave the items behind the counter while I went to get some cash out. Normally I would feel too embarrassed to return, but upon my return, it was as though it never happened! Thank God! It is a standard off-license and convenience store and sells the usual alcohol, tobacco, snacks and the odd toiletries and household produce. The prices are fairly moderate. Good for those who live near York Road or who work in Kings Heath.
